Maine

For anyone who knows Dr. Temple Grandin's work with the livestock industry I thought I would let you know she will be speaking at Pineland in New Gloucester on May 13th. The topic is Animal Handling and Optimizing Your Setup. The event is free but you do have to reserve a spot.

If you aren't familiar with her she is an amazing person with Autism who was profiled in a wonderful HBO documentary. She also has written several books including 'Animals in Translation'. I read it last year and found it very interesting and though provoking. She has spent much of her life trying to improve the end of life care of beef cattle and other livestock. To think that she was able to change the minds of cattlemen especially back in the 70's is amazing. One of her beliefs is that most humans have lost the ability to see things and experience things from an animal point of view. As a result we design enclosures that suit our needs but not the needs of animals.

For anyone with ties to Autism or related disorders such as Asperger's she will also be giving a talk on "Autism and My Sensory Based World" at USM Portland in the afternoon of the 13th. Tickets are $35 and only 500 are available. This one is sponsored by Northeast Speech and Hearing.

I am planning on going to both. The first because I am interested in hearing her thoughts on animal handling and the second because I have Asperger's.

too bad it is on the 13th, having a son that was diagnosed autistic and another PDD-NOS(on the spectrum) I would definitely be interested but I have class on the SMCC campus....

ON the topic of autism spectrum, do you know there are great resources at the Maine Autism Society located in Winthrop, as well as other trainings that go on throughout the year. There is also the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council that focuses on policy change and legislation, the Disability Rights Center that does protection and advocacy and Speaking Up For Us, Maine's self-advocacy network for people with developmental disabilities. I can give you contact info for any of those organizations if anyone needs/wants them.
I am reading Temple's book 'Animals Make Us Human' I would loan when I am done if interested.

im expecting to start haveing some baby chicks any time now i had 2 hens go broody on me but my problem is that my other chickens seem to be laying eggs in with the 2 hens and i dont really know what im going to do to keep them away from them but im thinking when we get the new baby chicks to put the rest of the eggs in my incubator to finish hatching them out because in the last 3 days the number of eggs they are setting on has gone up by 8

I have been reading everyones posts about raising turkeys and its killing me! I would LOVE to raise some in the future because...well, because turkey is DELICIOUS! However, I have one major problem. Turkeys scare the pants off me!!! I dont know why, they just do. Their icky little faces and that big red thing hanging over their noses, and that weird turkey trot they do.....creeps me out!

get in there and mark those 8 eggs so you know you have 8 and any after that will be that much longer to hatch (pencil rubs off in the nest so I use marker on the air space end)

they can be pretty friendly (and rather dumb) . I don't like the looks of them until they come out of the oven.
