Maine

I also worked on a new coop/pen/tractor today. I had parts that I saved from a portable garage that collapsed a couple years ago. The frame is done and I covered the top with wire fencing (not easy to see in the picture). Now I just have to cover the ends and figure out a way to put a door in one end. I have some ideas so I will see if it works. Then I will add a tarp to cover one section to block wind and weather. Plus a shelter for privacy. I will probably add more fencing around the bottom to discourage predators from getting in. The spacing is a bit too wide to keep some of the more determined ones from getting in. Once done the Sikies can move in.

If this works well I have enough parts to make another one or two depending on what size I want. Hopefully it will work since I need one for the turkeys.

Hoppy...any update on your hen? Is she (GULP) still with us?!

I put my order in for chicks today...25 total, with 5 going to a friend...which means we'll end up with 20. Hubby was a little surprised about that, but I told him I HAD to order that many, minimum. Looking forward to adding Americaunas, Welsummers, Leghorns & Speckled Sussex to our flock!

Of course you did. You need so many of each breed so they don't feel left out. And you want even numbers because having an odd number of chickens just make the flock look lop-sided.

And it is also how chicken math makes addicts of us all.

I wish I could say she was still here, but I culled her yesterday. leg was much worse and I didn't want to drag things out if she wasn't going to get better.
I just hatched out wheaton americaunas and welsummers are cooking. I only have 4 welsummer eggs. got 9 but the color was so poor, they were not worth setting. dogs like them.
looks like widgets been busy today. I cleaned pens yesterday and have been worn out since then. hopefully by the weekend I'll be back to normal.

I am SUCH a sucker! The thought of hand raising some chicks was way too appealing, especially with the kiddos involved (or at least the older one). I now have 6 chicks from TSC sitting in a brooder in my bedroom. That should make sleeping fun tonight! HA! Only place I could put it that would be safe from the cats and dog though, so there it will stay!

I picked them up from TSC, wound up with 4 Amber links and 2 Red Sexlinks. More that I wanted, thanks to the pesky minimums. Not sure what I'll do with extras. Are red sexlinks the same as golden comets, or is the coloring different? I was planning on getting a pair of older comets, but if the reds are the same thing, I'll just skip the Comets.

Would anyone be interested in two of the Amber links? Or trading for a pair of Orpington pullet chicks? Especially if the Orps are anything other than buff, since I now have a flock of all buff/fawn colored chickens. lol (Though I wouldn't be opposed to buff if that's all that's available) I'm in Standish, would be willing to meet/trade/whatever anywhere between Augusta to Sanford to North Conway or so.

I was at TSC today and avoided temptation. I thought about the Pekin ducks sincethey were on sale but since the ducks I ordered from Holderreads are due in two weeks I came home with just dog food.

I would trade with you but my Orps have yet to arrive. And they will be Buffs.

My mother called me this morning, to see if I wanted to go with her. I told her no, I needed to stay home and work. Yeah, so much for working! LOL

Honestly, I don't mind buffs. I love fawn/golden colored animals. I'm just sayin, if the option for other colors were out there, I'd love to take advantage of some variety. If not, buffs are still gorgeous birds. If you wanted to trade a pair once they come in, just lmk. ;) Or even one Orpington and one of something else if you wanted.

Widget awesome job on the hoop house. We're going to do one here, we bought the cattle panels for it last weekend. We're going to do the doors like this:

Hopefully that helps you.

Do you need a bee suit to do the bees? Do you ever take honey?

Hubby read this comment and says, "This sounds JUST like you!" That's pretty much how my brain figures it all out!

I am down to 8 hens right now (2 each of 4 different breeds), because I didn't get any chicks last year, since it was my first Spring as a new mother & didn't know if I could handle it. ANYWAY...8 hens (+ 1 BEAUTIFUL rooster from Hoppy), and now 4 NEW breeds... 5 of each because you DO have to have even numbers...except this brings my new total to 29!!

I just don't count the rooster, so it keeps it nice & even!

I really wanted to get some Giants & Brahmas, too, but I had to bring myself to a limit at some point!! Maybe next year...

Needless to say...hubby will be busy updating our pens for the large group of new arrivals!

Sorry to hear about her. I didn't know you were doing Americaunas & Welsummers too...I've got some of those coming & I'm curious to see how they work out.
