Maine

I have not made chicken diapers but I have made the chicken saddles. I think all I have left are the bantam sizes. I used them on my girls for a short time but my roo is not that rough so i didn't use them at all last yr. my favorite material is recycled jeans. it's strong and durable and usually the first ones to sell out. I made some with a cute ruffle on the back. I'll be at skowhegan but not sure what i'm bringing. my side kick (my son) doesn't want to go, so i'll be solo.

Hoppy, that sure is a big disappointment!
I know you are a pretty crafty person do you happen to make chicken diapers? I was looking at them online, U Tube has a video to make them, however the learning curve for me is probably not worth the time.. It is two pieces of fabric and some elastic.
BTW i have to take a video of a roo I have here I bought from you last year, I bought a set of three, 2 hens which I killed with the Sevin dust, and he came through fine except for being huge, has no clue he is a rooster, has never crowed, the other roosters don't bother him, and he hangs with the hens. He is a black orpington. We throw things to eat across the yard just to watch him run. He runs about like I do, it is hysterical, down hill is even funnier when he tries to put the brakes on. When you put the feed in the dish he is like a woman with PMS and a chocolate bar.
For anyone who uses the aprons, will they stay on a hen that free ranges? I have a few hens which I would really like to use them on. How about overheating problems with them? The boys are just doing a number on their poor backs.
A general update on the two turkey chicks I have in the house with the bantam hen. One thinks I am surrogate Momma and flies up on top of my head, and happily rides around while the other one follows us. I put the hen out morning and evening to do her business and get her dust bath, then let her back in and she hops in the cage with them. They are going to be as big as she is soon and are quite the sight when they each try to get under a wing now. I gotta get a pen set up in the barn to get them out of here soon. Another two weeks and I will need a second pen for ducklings that will be hatching
Who is going to Skowhegan Saturday and what are they bringing? I really should stay home but my roomie is egging me on, and insisting we need to go. I have done well and stayed away from the last two swaps.

sooo... I went down to the coop this morning, and my little wheaten old english chick was missing from the box, I was freaking out, I looked around and finally found her, she was between my other cage and the wall, no longer under the light! I Thought that she was dead, but I poked her and she was still alive! She was sprawled out, eyes shut, not peeping, and not moving (twitching) I pretty much knew that she was going to die, but I held her under the light, and put her back in the box, she still wasn't moving, I just left them and went to the softball game and the auction, and when I finally got back from all of that, I went back down expecting to remove a dead chick from the box, but instead I got the pleasant surprise of poking the chick and having her perk right up and go along with her life!! I felt so awesome!!

I use saddles on some girls and I've only had one issue, one girl figured out how to get out of it, but only once. They don't overheat, they don't get caught on anything (if it's the right size). They aren't able to dustbathe as well so maybe more mite issues, but I haven't experienced that.

I bought mine from Louise's Country Closet (she's on BYC and also on FB) about a year ago. They're still holding up. LCC shipped them out really quickly to me, and they're pretty nice. For someone who doesn't sew, they were a good find.

should we ask what you bought at the auction this week? I know you got a great deal on some silkies a few weeks back.

I only feed them near their coop, or out in the backyard & hubby is CONSTANTLY "chasing" them off the front porch so I can't figure out what the big draw to it is...maybe just to give us a challenge?!

It's been all blocked off since yesterday, and so far that seems to be keeping them away. I figure if they go a couple of days withOUT getting on it, it will break their routine. We'll see.

I learned to keep them off the porch, don't feed them near the porch or they will come looking for you.
as far as a spray, citrus keeps cats away, not sure if it would work for chickens because parrots love citrus.

Are people finding any good deals on DE, lately? In my area nobody had heard of it, as of 2-3 years ago...and now it's everywhere!! I picked up a 40lb. bag for $30 yesterday, which I thought was an okay deal, considering the 6lb. container was $20!! Yikes!!

Anyone interested in Black Spanish Turkey Eggs. A friend of mine is hatching some out now to check fertility and it is good. She also has the babies for sale. She is asking $8 each and the eggs are $30 a dozen. We can ship if necessary but that would be extra. These are located in Buckfield.

Quote: Will you be selling any Marans?
Not that I should even ask that question, considering the man of the house is away for 6 months & I have 3 ducklings on the way this weekend... but...

OOOHHH! OOOHHH! OOOHHH! Raising hand! (for those of you old enough to remember Horshack from Mr Kotter)
I am not that far from Buckfield and would like to try a few of the chicks.
I know they take forever to grow but I am interested in Heritage breeds.

Yes, I will be selling a few. I've been really wanting them for over a year, and since I couldn't find any for sale around here, I decided to hatch some
