Maine

Ours are locked in a coop at night, but I usually let them free range during the day. We have an electronet, but no charger for it so it's not much of a barrier to a determined predator. Our dogs do well at keeping coyotes off, as well as raccoons and other small predators, but for some reason the foxes are not too fazed by the dogs chasing them. Our landlord used to have HUGE problems with groundhogs here, but I think my in-laws' working terrier ran them off when we dog-sat her for a couple of weeks, and the fox has now moved in to the old burrow. I keep seeing him down by the lower entrance to the groundhog den, thankfully at this time of year the chickens are close enough to the house and there is enough other prey that my hens are not worth it. My rooster is very protective of the flock, too, and he is always alert for danger to them. I did see the fox take a quail out of the air the other day, which was pretty cool.

After culling my favorite Brahma for an eye issue I feel bad. The Vet Rx was bought but I think her eye was lost and she was in pain. I had to do it. Hated to though.
I have boraxed and limed and cidered and Vet Rxed the heck out of our place now. I know 'some loss' is normal but this just peeves me so much. Were there issues here before I came? What more can I do? I am getting ready to have my flock NPIP and this happens... its upsetting. Where do you send a bird for necropsy? I just bought these really nice4 week old FCBMs and now I don't dare have them anywhere I have the other birds. Very inconvenient because now I need a a whole new quarantine space. I wish I had a means to buying your tractors Hoppy. It might save me some effort building here. If any one 'dares' buy a few of the FCBM they came from Taylor Farms and are vaccinated and arrived today. They are 4 wks old. Pm me.

Sorry for the bad time you are having, ashandvine. :(. It sounds like you did the right thing, since your bird was suffering, difficult as that decision is.
When we lost one to illness, DH had to drive it all the way up to UMaine for the necropsy. It is $25, and we had to chill the bird immediately after death (I wrapped it and put it in the refrigerator). The results were kind of vague, - she had a reproductive issue, as well as bacterial pneumonia, which they thought might have been caused by migrating cecal worms.
I didn't entirely understand the results. Others in the flock have had mild respiratory symptoms that come and go, but no real sickness or drop in egg production, so I am not too worried about it.
I hope you get everything worked out soon. Chicken problems are frustrating!

One of my Roo's is stumbling around like he is drunk and I don't know what is wrong with him. I have him isolated, and he is drinking fine and eating like a pig, but his legs don't seem to want to work. I don't feel a break (but I'm no medical expert), and he seems bright and alert. Has anyone had this problem or know what it might be ?

Just wanted to put it here in case anyone misses it on our Windham Chicken Swap thread. I got my wires crossed with the times and arranged with the store to have us start there at 9am. Then listed it here as starting at 8am. I appologize for any confusion, but we are scheduled to start there with the store at 9am.

Thanks all and sorry again for the confusion!

I'm from Oakland and we have three coops. The one for my wyandotte trio which isn't insulated. The other two aren't insulated either and chickens are fine and healthy.

Hope it helps

FREE ROOSTER (like there aren't enough out there, already - right?!)

2 yr-old Blue-Laced Red Wyandotte. One of Hoppy's lines. (Check out his pictures!)
***edited, as I stand corrected by his original Mama - He's dark, but he's BLUE!

He is big and he is beautiful and he is an excellent rooster. Unfortunately, since I free range our birds, my daughter (almost 2) is not able to "free" play outside because this guy goes after her...EVERY time. He knows better than to bother me, he steers clear of hubby, and he has no problem with our dog & cat who are always out & about with the chickens, but our little girl must be just the 'right' size that he sees her as a threat/competition/SOMETHING!

Hubby has given the ultimatum that we either re-home him or he will have a new home in our freezer. I hate to see such a BEAUTIFUL rooster killed in the prime of his life and I'm hoping that somebody will take him?

He is FREE, you just have to come get him...and catch him (not an issue in the morning before they go out for the day). We live in Nobleboro - between Bath & Rockland and not far from Augusta. The original deadline given by hubby was tomorrow, but I have gotten him an extension to the weekend, so please let me know if there is any interest!!

While he does seem to have a blue-ish tint, I posted a photo of him with one of the blue hens and he is definitely darker.

Thanks Hoppy!!
I have been going back & forth since I got him, because he DOES have a blue color & you weren't 100% if they would be blue or black, but I thought because he was so much darker, he might be black! Good to know!
