Maine

So... I feel really proud of myself today: short term plans are being met. This week I managed to transition chickens, reduce my numbers a little, built a feeder and now I realized I might have meat birds here after all. I wanted so much to breed these Marans I got. SOP for them is tough, but they are big and beautiful either way. As it turns out I am really taken with their personalities and behavior. I lost my cockerel, as stated earlier in the thread, but Kinsey traded me an Orp today. I didn't know why I wanted him at the time but now I do! He can breed with my Marans to make meat babies while I look for another FCBM cockerel! My brain is strange that way. I think almost all night long. I wake up at odd hours suddenly remembering where I put something or how to build things or whatever. Some level of my brain was thinking this cockerel could help provide us with lovely food. I know nothing about Orps so I can't say if he fits SOP or anything but he is handsome and for now a black ray of hope for my intentions to breed for food... like SCG. Still looking for Saxony or Appleyards btw. (prefer Saxony)

Two of my Easter hatch pullets just started laying, and I'm finally get some weird green colors! The three eggs on the upper right are from the new pullets:

Bought two bags of layer pellets from my local Blue Seal dealer. Price was $14.99 a bag. The Poulin dealer has their layer pellets at $14.35 a bag.

The worst sticker shock was at one of the gas stations I drive by daily. Yesterday it was $3.93 a gallon. This morning is was $4.19. Where I normally get gas it was $3.89 yesterday and $3.99 today. Wonder what the excuse is this time for price hike.

I was shocked! We went to the wildlife park over in Gray today. $4.19 at the Irving between there and Windham! :barnie I think it's still $3.89 at the Cumbys isn't it?

Unless the price goes up I may try switching to BS pellets. $3/bag adds up! Right now we have a bag of Layena crumbles plus two bags of Dumor pellets, so hopefully prices don't skyrocket in the meantime.

Those are some pretty eggs!!

Right now, unless someone is hiding their eggs, Snowball (brahma) is the only one laying still. My mother has two from the same hatch as my sexlinks, so hopefully those 4 will start laying SOOON! I'm tired of waiting! Really can't wait to see what my EEs produce once they start! One is a barred rock cross, will she lay a light olive, or brown? I'm actually really surprised my silkie hasn't started laying yet, I'm pretty sure she's old enough now. She's the blue one we got from you Hoppy, so 6 or 7 months old now, isn't she?

I'll start this post with a non chicken statement- My Bread and Butter Pickles and my Pickling Cukes won blue ribbons at the Litchfield Fair!!

now on to chickens....

My girls are coming up on 20 and 22 weeks and still not an egg- I've got a few who are very red too- are we behind? just right? I'm super jealous ( in the nice kind of way!) of everyone with all of the eggs right now!!
