...like a showgirl or showgirl cross?

I prefer Silkie. Although your Showgirl is really cute in an E.T. sort of way.

Not to be pushy, but I usually do the New Years Hatch, and my birds go outside around the middle of February (by 6 weeks old), without a heat lamp, just in a coop... and I've never lost a one.

Besides, more birds to snuggle with on the roost = winter birdie happiness... right?

Do you ever have an issue with fertility in the winter? I don't think I could deal with young chicks in the winter, although maybe a February hatch would be okay. And Easter is a tiny bit earlier this year, last day of March.

Hoppy, I would vote for the box with glass tiles. I like things that are functional as well as decorative, which is strange, because my art is not functional! I really like the emu eggs, too.

Elcimd, you will need a limit soon! First I borrowed an incubator, then I bought one, then I decided I need two. Good thing DH is a carpenter! :D

So far no issues with fertility in the winter. I get nearly 100% hatch rate on my eggs. This year though I've got a tiny showgirl rooster as my alpha roo, and although he tries to get the job done, it is ... uhm... physically more difficult than with a regular sized roo, although the dear does try hard. To help him, I've got a regular sized EE roo in there, too, but the showgirl keeps him in his place most of the time.

I'm still on the fence about this years NYD hatch, but I'll probably do it, that way I have grown females to sell when the swaps start back up.

Enabler for sure!

Oh yes; everything starts out nice and simple and then WHAM! I need more color and variety and until I saw SCG little one I never dreamed I'd want a poofy showgirl. But she is so unique looking. Oh and silkies too....

I blame our variety on my kids, who can resist when 3 little girls see the fluffy chickens at the fair and beg for a Silkie :) I plan to try and hatch a few if I can get some fertile Silkie eggs, for the kids of course. I can't let them down now can I?

Plus I like having a mix of birds in our flock.

I never liked silkies much (and never had them), but I have this incredible love for anything with a naked neck. I have a small army of naked necks over here, and hatched showgirl eggs on a whim about a year ago. I would absolutely get some more after having them, and would encourage people not to judge them before they get one.

Lots of people around here have silkie eggs, I know for sure Hoppy sells them. I will probably get some more eggs from her and try to get a girl this time. My silkie boy was cute, but I wanted to keep the showgirl roo instead. That way, I can combine with my showgirl roo (who is a complete naked neck) and always get showgirls out of it. In theory, anyway. My showgirl pullet only has eyes for me.

Speaking of which, my showgirl pullet that is, I had to stay late at work today, got home after dark and everyone (including the showgirl and the turkeys) were in the coop, and roosting. The showgirl was on the lowest ladder (where she'd get pooped on) but it was easy to move her to her roost. I am so thankful that she made it inside. Last time I got home late the turkeys were roosting on the fence and she was on the coop porch, wailing.

Ready for the snow?

Is anybody still hatching at the moment? I just had a terrible hatch of shipped eggs, and it looks like I'm going to have a singleton. I'm hoping to find her a friend, but I imagine it's going to be a difficult time of year to find a chick. I'm in the midcoast and would be willing to drive up to an hour or so for one. PM me if you might be able to help.

Thanks!!

That would be a big NO. It would be one thing if I had a force field over my driveway so that snow would not accumulate. Then I would say okay as long as it didn't snow when I had to be out on the road driving.

If you get some extra showgirl eggs anytime around mid-January keep me in mind. I just might be interested in firing up the incubator.

Hooray for PigPen! Maybe I will sleep better knowing she can make it inside on her own.

I don't know if I would enjoy Silkies and/or Showgirls. I'm sure they make adorable pets, but it's the eggs I'm really after.

I know we are not supposed to get all that much snow, but I am so glad we got the hoop coop moved last Sunday. I was kind of sick (still coughing even today), but it is not a project that would be any fun in even a little snow. And it was good timing to get them near the electricity. The heated dog bowls are great.
