MAJOR problem with the puppies

I feel your pain Debi.. I know if my dogs got the chance they would kill my birds also. Actually my female DID get the chance...she thought it was great fun to chase them and make them squack and grab their feet and rip out their tail and wing feathers....

None died thankfully..but if we wernt there..there would have been dead birds. I was SO mad at her...and she knew it too....the next day i took her outside..and put a prong collar on her...i let my birds out and when she went to go after them i yanked it good and hard...she dropped down. then..i put them..one at a time in front of her face (while making her lay down..) and i told her EASY! No bite!..(because she knows what i mean when i say those words....).. and i just kept on doing it...And if she so much as looked at the birds i yanked the collar and corrected her... now..i can have her in the yard with me while the birds are out....but if she got out there alone...shes go after them again..i just know it.. Shes a rascal!
My grandpa swore by tying the dead birds around the dogs neck till they basically rot.. I doubt i could do that..but..people swear it worked for them..and some say it dosent work..so..

We already have that in place. The issue for me is when we are cleaning the doors are open. Usually they never get out and the dogs don't get in, but this one time kinda scared me.

Wow, simple fix then! Just hot wire the open door a few times when you are cleaning. drop steak chunks on the other side, toss chickens a few feet in the air so they flap their wings to go to the ground. make little dying rabbit sounds with a blade of grass between your thumbs. They will hit that hot wire, and bounce back five feet. You only have to establish an impassable boundary of a few feet, a place that never moves and you have complete control over. I lucked out and got a hot wire fence at a yard sale yesterday for cheap!

If one dogs gets the chickens running from them, since they are a pack, the other 2 would join in. So that sweet one is then a chicken killer. I would suggest seperating them, or getting rid of 2 to appropriate homes, although I know you love them.

I love the sweet one most. I need to talk with Ken more about this. I already suggested getting rid of two and he didn't comment.

That is exactly how we trained our 5 yr old Maltipoo ~ it didn't take him long and now they run around the yard together. It takes patience and working with them everyday.

oh no... shock collars? again??

Please don't use a shock collar unless you know how dogs learn. If you misuse it your dogs could become more aggressive towards your chickens because dogs learn by ASSOCIATION.

seriously, you can do more harm than good with those things.

Some people swear by shock collars..i dont know if they work or not. So, i'll reserve MY judgement until i actually try one..(hopefully i wont ever have to though)

oh, I see you ran right here, too! Gotta get that last word in, huh?

Personally I've seen the damage done by shock collars because I studied dog training and behavior for quite a few years. We used to run puppy K classes, private behavior consults and basic obedience classes. So, I feel my *OPINION* is fairly valid.

but, uh..... CARRY ON.
