depends on if you want to try and make money from eggs or live bird sales.

eggs walk away from the cute and fade chickens now and buy high egg production breeds.

be prepared to cull heavily only keeping the best layers.


live bird sales you will be going down a long road. you will need to invest top lines of the breed you chose, cull heavily to remove all birds with imperfections. Become NPIP in your state. Invest in shipping boxes (only 1 style approved to send birds). Figure out a marketing strategy. Figure out a feeding and water system that is efficient. This is just a brief over view

Is it actually possible to make more money than you spend raising chickens in your back yard( hens )

depends on how you manage it all.
we make a very unnoticeable profit of ours. if you mean making money buy living on it, i would say no.
on the good days, we get around 40 eggs a day. they eat 1/3 a bag of feed a day.
feed is $17 a bag (going up though), so we spend around 6 dollars a day on feed. Our hens are free range, if not then we would be spending the whole 17 a day.
we sell our eggs at $3 a dozen, so in one day we make 9 dollars, and eat the rest. 3 dollars left over, so in one week, we would profit an average of $21 dollars. In one year, we would make 1,090. not much, since we spend all the extra money buying chicks and feeding them till they lay. lol
