OK, here is the chicken sifter I promised to post for inquiring chicken lovers.

This is in response to the kinds of material to put in the run to make it easier to clean and stay clean.

I have lots of sand in my run. The sand came from the sand and gravel place and I got a quarter yard for $15. That came to nineteen 5-gallon buckets that I had to lug home myself.

Sand is so easy to rake up chicken poo and then pile it on the sifter, give it a few shakes from side to side, and end up with nice, dry poo to take to the compost pile. My nine hens provide 2.5 gallons of poo every week. I always have a nice compost pile to add to my garden.

Because the wire appears so light, it might be hard to see, but I think you can get the idea. It is simply made from two 3' fence stakes and some 1/4" welded wire wrapped around and bolted on. The finished size is about 18" wide and 36" long. It is easy to bend in a half-circle to dump in a 5-gallon bucket.

I swear this is the only way to go!

P.S...... I'm interested in knowing how you guys get those cute little emoticons in your emails. I have the smiley's but nothing like those little guys rolling on the floor laughing.

I was waiting for you to post this!!!! Thanks! Such a wonderful idea...like using a scooper for the cat litter box. Except no cat poo in the compost:th
I will make one tomorrow, I have the supplies handy.
As far as the emoticons go....when you post, there is a blank section on the right of the message box....click on the blue 'show' and it brings up a selection:weee

Have a great go at the great chicken sifter. I couldn't clean up with out it now.

Thanks for the emoticon tip!!! I must have been blind!
