Oh and you don't need a hole saw. I just traced the elbow and drilled a hole. Then cut with a jig saw. Even a utility knife would do the trick really. Especially on thinner plastic.
 
Now you have an excuse to get a screw on lid from Home Depot or Amazon

I had the gamma screw on lids but since I had to open them so often I switched to a regular one. They were always caked with chicken poo and hard to open.

Yea we tried to cut the plastic buckets with a hot knife and we killed the brand new hot knife. Lol
 
We made two of these a couple of weeks ago. Very easy and so much cleaner! We already started using them this week for our 3+ week old cornish x's. I was surprised they could use it this young, but I guess they are quite large. The hens (same age) are not nearly big enough to use it comfortably yet. So my question is, has anyone tried building one with smaller elbows for young chicks? I'm not sure it would work, but it would really get rid of a good portion of the hassle of brooding chicks.
