Make your own - No waste - 5 gallon (25# feed) bucket feeder for about $3

thats true. I was liking the appeal of not having feed all over because I have a rodent problem.

but then....that would be a huge thing to find somewhere to put it each night in case there was feed in it for the rodents.

dang.

6" drain DWV fittings are also available. If not from your local big box store, most areas have plumbing supply houses.

I think that would be more appropriate for roosters with huge combs and wattles like the one in my avatar.

There's another option. Feed the hens layer feed with the smaller fittings and suspend a hanging feeder high enough the hens can't reach with feed more appropriate for the rooster. That would either be a 15% finisher or a 12% game bird maintenance feed - or a mixture of both.

If your feeding a certain amount each day, you could use the bucket feeder and get some caps for the pipe. You would have to uncap it each morning, and then cap it when they've had enough feed. That may be an option?

Just a thought...

Thanks to the 5 gallon bucket design making the chickens reach in to eat.
I built one out of wood. I have piles of wood scraps.. cost me nothing..
I made my opening 3 inches wide by 5 inches tall.. should solve issues with roosters with tall comb.
Poked nails thru lid to keep them off it it works.
I've used it a week and notice big savings in feed.. was feeding 5 scoops a day.. now about 3..

Nice design using the wood, but I don't think I'd do that nail thing, one of the birds could get seriously injured...maybe building a pyramid with your scrap wood for the top would be a safer idea?

I thought about that.. I'll keep a eye on it.. had it near the roost so far all they did was peck at the nails..so far it's kept them from trying for it since they can't seem to find a spot to fly too. I could try a pyramid top. . I'll be building a second one maybe I'll try that

With the wood box style u don't think you can fill it to the top without it spilling out. Or can you? The nails is a very innovative idea but it does risk injury to the birds.
