I agree with this. I am going to start showing again hopefully in 2011 I am just getting my flock of BBS faverolles going and I want to show the birds that I bred not the ones I bought.

I see no harm in showing birds you bought, in fact I think it is a good idea. The judges may find faults that you were not aware of, and many judges will give you an honest opinion of your birds after they are finished judging (besides the comments and marks they leave on the coop tags). Some will even allow you to watch them judge your breed if you tell them that you want to learn. Other, more experienced exhibitors, are also a wealth of information and most will give you their opinion of your birds whether you asked them for it or not (which IMHO is a good thing, either way). True, you can start with breeders that are less than perfect, but you need to know what to work on to get them to where you want them. If you buy them just to win and then dump them for better birds if they do not, then you are in it for all the wrong reasons.

I do show birds I bought for that exact reason its like a really good critique but I would rather have my birds be winning and not someone else birds. I just mean it must feel much more satisfying to win with birds you worked hard and chose mating to create and hatched and raised from day 1. I didn't mean its wrong to show birds you bought there are other reasons behind me not showing again until 2011. Guess I just worded it wrong

I agree about buying birds and if they don't win dumping them you need to work hard to make winning show birds.

So true. Buying a top show quality pair does not mean you have it made either. Even the best lines can go downhill real, real fast. Either way, you are going to have your work cut out for you. Culling, even knowing which birds to call and when, and keeping records is not that easy. Some faults are much harder to get rid of than others and you would be better off getting a bird that has a more major fault that is easier to fix than one with a minor one that takes generations to get rid of. And some never do completely. It just keeps cropping up after a couple of generations.

I do know several people that buy and show birds every year.I really dont think I would get anything out of this myself but several do.Just because someone buys a top show bird from a breeder doesnt meen that they will be able to keep the bird in as good of condition as the real breeder.I have seen guys buy some very nice males in October and by December you couldnt even recognize the bird. There is a whole lot more to breeding and showing quality birds than just hatching and raising them up.

If the Non-Bearded Silkie is of good Quality it will win. The Delmarva show had an outstanding Non bearded (Had the biggest Creat ever!) win BB and more this year. She was also the RB from the Northeast Poultry Congress in Jan. That bird was bred & shown by Kate Morreale (master breeder of silkies) She has some of the best birds as well as THE best non-bearded I have Ever seen) So yes they will win, but they have to be really GOOD!

I agree with April!

Kate's nonbearded white girl was to die for! I'm pretty sure she also won Champion or Reserve Champion Featherleg?
