making barn bigger--getting ready for pigs--looking for input...

I have an old shed (8x8 railroad tie posts 10 feet apart supporting a roof) I wrapped this shed with chain link material as an impromtu pig pen. It lasted from the time my pig was 10 lbs up to 250 lbs. dont know if it would have lasted longer or not. when ever he saw me coming with the food bucket he would get his front feet up on the wire and lean into it.

Sorta! Except I don't really rotate the tractor. I pick an area with too many blackberries and let them stomp the hell out of them until market weight. I also let the goats in with them, since they'll pull down the higher branches. The the pigs will stomp the hell out of them.

I had pigs clear about a 100' x 100' area last year which I'm using for a burn pile and storing tractor implements.

And finally, to the guy feeding 'slop'. You probably want to still buy a commercial ration just to be sure they're getting enough protein and the mineral balance is correct. Just missing a few % on certain vitamins or amino acids and your pigs won't grow.

But, with that said, practically everything goes to the pigs at our house... they ate 4,000 lbs of pumpkins, too, from the patch next door after Haloween... and they also eat zucini, which let's face it, anything that will eat zucini is an animals all we gardeners need.
