making money from selling eggs?

I sell my eggs at the farmers market here in Northern CA. I am getting ready to go today. I sell brown eggs from my varied free range hens for $3.00 dzn and I have blue eggs from my araucanas that I sell for $ 2.50 for 1/2 dzn. Sometimes I sell out and sometimes not. At my market there is a grouchy lady in a stall accross from mine that sells her eggs from $ 4.00 dzn to $ 6.00 dzn depending on size. She is very grouchy, never smiles and one time one of our city council women bought her eggs and was parading them around because they were funny shaped. They had warts and wrinkles. Like that was a good thing. I am very careful only to sell the nicest looking cleanest eggs. No wrinkles or warts. ARRG!

Anyway, I have people that call me to set aside eggs for them ahead of time and then they come to the market to get them. I also have one man that has bought eggs every week from me and I deliver them because he has been a good customer for 3 years. It cost more to drive to his house than I sell the eggs for but he has told other people where he gets his eggs from so its good.

I know some people that are in Sonoma county that get $ 5.00 to $ 8.00 a dzn.

I sell hatching eggs for $ 15.00 dzn. Had someone drive for 3 hrs to come and get some.

Do I make money on this no, but the chickens almost pay for themselves. I am breeding my own flock this year so next year I won't have the expense of buying chickens.

I also sell araucana chicks, but its all just a happy hobby.

Everyone has chickens for their own personal reasons. Most of us enjoy having them for the fresh eggs and they're so entertaining to watch. If you have extra eggs and people want to buy them...that's just less money out of your pocket for feed. I love chickens and I just hatched my own chicks. I've had chickens since I was a kid except the last 13 years. Didn't have the right place for them nor the time to care for them since I was in college. Now I have the time. I will enjoy them first and foremost and the fact that I'll have fresh eggs everyday will be great and if I have a few to sell...those that buy them will benefit from my chickens as well. Can't go wrong having chickens

Oh...and they're droppings are also great to use for fertilizer for my garden, they love the left over table scraps...nothing goes to waste around here when you have chickens!

I don't raise eggs to sell but when the hens come on line laying one per day they tend to pile up. After I supply my family I will sell off the rest to neighbors and a few Facebook friends if they come for them. I charge only a buck a dozen with a returned carton otherwise a $1.50. I know this is cheap but I don't want to exactly give them away and people don't want freebies either. Usually in a good week I can bring in enough to pay for my feed. I have, when they really started to pile up, given them to the local food back as well and kept track of them as a charitable contribution.

There was a time--15 yrs back when I had 20 Rouen ducks that I'd sell their eggs to a local Chinese restaurant for $4 a dozen and they'd take all I had.

Since we've only gotten one egg so far, I buy 1/2 dozen eggs from the Encino Farmers' Market. 1/2 dozen costs $3. They are medium to large, light brown eggs.

My daughter wants a egg equivalent to a lemonade stand once we have ours all laying, but I'm not going for it. I plan to give away eggs to our neighbors to keep up the goodwill.

The average cost for a dozen eggs up here in Alaska is $4.00 a dozen. There are several sellers of fresh brown eggs, which most people want. The sellers are just folks like you and I who have several hens and sell the eggs they can't use. I have friends at work who buy these eggs and I asked them why they choose a certain farmers eggs over another. They say they choose according to the packaging as they trust the eggs will basically taste the same. One carton I saw was clear plastic and each egg had a stamp mark on it (stamp and ink pad) with a colorful design/logo which showed throught the clear carton. It was quite attractive and clever. I suppose this was more eye appealing to the buyers.

A rubber stamp for the eggs. That is a great idea. Something neat looking to go with my blue eggs. I have recycled clear plastic cartons and am quick to point out the recycled part. I want my eggs to look great. I always make sure they are buffed clean. I want mine to stand out from the others, because they all taste the same. I smile and say hello to everyone that walks by.

I currently raise Quail and I sell the eggs $2.50 for 15 eggs. I just hatched my first batch of chicken eggs May 17th and I plan on selling them for $1.00 a dozen. I have a sign in my front yard and I have a number of people who buy my eggs. Good Luck to everyone !! It's a hobby for me and I'm happy to raise enough money to buy feed and supplies.
