Making poultry nipples!

Does the water get funky or stagnant if they don't drink it fast enough? I only have 6 hens so looks like this company sells a two gallon premade that may be big enough. Don't want five gallons or more sitting around and getting old. I'm cleaning out the duck pool every other day so filling not an issue.

My 5 gallon waterer is in my coop and I haven't cleaned it out in 8 weeks. No slime or build up, I just add fresh water once a week for 8 hens. When I was using the 1 gallon waterer in my brooder, I didn't clean that for 5 weeks and never had an issue either. Now if your waterer is in direct sun, it may have to be washed out periodically, plus the water would get hotter, than being in the shade.

No, never... I just run the hose through the pipe. its still fresh

I personally like the horizontal nipples better. No leaks, no sealant needed to seal the threads, you can set the bucket on blocks, in case you have a low roof, a bird bath heater will keep the water warm enough, so nipples won't freeze ( I've read on here, that the vertical ones can). Yes, the horizontal nipples are more expensive for a reason, they work great and last a long time. IMO.
Edit: I just read another thread where where you can't set the bucket down to fill it up, another plus for horizontal nipples.

Yes, but mine work great too. They have never leaked.

I have never had to change mine.. the water stays fresh. They never leak either

Great how-to. I haven't had to use sealant on mine. The threads are tapered so it seals well enough in the PVC pipe. They do leak a wee bit from the nipple itself, though. But not a problem where I have the waterer.
