Making the most of it.

I have four left. They go in lock down tomorrow. I'm gonna try again when I build my coolerabater.. Just waiting for parts to arrive.
Years ago, when I was up to my ears in bird dogs, I bought my 1st & only incubator and a bunch of bobwhite quail eggs, hoping to re-populate the local area so I'd have wild quail to work the dogs on. Out of 60 or so eggs, I think I managed to hatch out about 40%, most of which I lost 'cause I was brooding them on the cold concrete floor in the basement & they got chilled...I knew way less then than I've since learned. When the survivors got some size to them, I released them into the field behind me; never saw hide nor hair of them again. I'm sure the local predators loved me 'til the free lunch ran out! I never tried to hatch anything else 'til this past July.

That is a great story. The quail might have been lunch but maybe they are hidden further in the forest. I read that it is common to get a 40 percent hatch on quail eggs. I hope you try to incubate again. It is therapeutic for me. Gives me a purpose. Hahahaha.

I am so excited about building it. I have a 48 quart igloo cooler.. I found extra 120 v 12 output plugs. Ordered a wafer thermostat. Can't wait!!!
I love all the 'bator builds everyone's got going on, but I don't envision ever needing any more capacity than I already have with my old Hova-Bator..I only need to hatch replacements.

I hope I always have an opportunity to hatch.. Mainly I'm just hatching for others and not myself... I have never tried to sell chicks but that scares me with the amount of Roos that pop out.

Have you heard of what Lazy Gardener's doing with setting only non-pointy eggs? The theory she & a few others are testing is that the more oval eggs produce a higher percentage of females than males. So far, her percentage of females has gone to 60% over the last few settings, where before it was only 40%

My old home made styro will hold about 24 - 28. Making a 48 qt. igloo that may hold 4 dozen. (hopefully) I'm sitting around wondering if I can possibly stack those eggs, since 2 dozen of them will be shipped, so it stands to reason that there will be a lot of clears, and early quitters, yes? So... I really should stack them, yes? Linda, are you putting more than one fan in yours? Are you using light bulb(s)? What wattage?
