Pretty boy. How old is he? He should color up more in the hackles as he gets older. He's a duckwing, and that silvering in the hackles will come in more intense, at least it should, unless there's something restricting his hackle color.

At what age can you start to tell the quality of a serama? I bought 12 serama chicks and will love and keep them as pets no matter what but it would be nice to find out their quality.

Very cute hen...

What are the main diffrences of Serma and japanese hens? I know Seramas come from some of the same breeding stock as the japanese. I have a few black Seramas hens with white on their necks and they look quite a bit like japanese hens. I'm having a hard time on-line telling them apart at times..

Is it size? I know the japs have short legs or should be.. and I guess Seramas legs should be longer or their wings not drag the ground but it seems like a lot of Seramas, their wings do drag the ground..

Here is a japanese hen. while they say they want a U shape in the japaness and the Seramas they want a V a lot of Seramas don't have a V shaped back.. I would say more have a U shaped back then a V like the above black hen.

And here is a standred I found for them, Is this hen sitting down? or standing up in the drawing? if she is standing her legs are VERY short and her wings drag the ground.. her back seems pretty V shaped to me.

Well.. serama hens are suppose to look like this...

Which I think is kind of an over exaggeration....but it gives you something to breed toward.

I think they should be more vertical with less back...

This one is a very young pullet of mine that I think had pretty good serama type for being only a few months old..

When I think of Japanese, I think of them being more horizontal, with sort of a sloping U shaped back with the tail coming back toward the head and long wings that point back toward the vent...with really short legs..
Like this one, that is clearly walking around...she doesn't look like a serama to me.

I can definitely see the similarities in both types when I compare pics of both breeds, but I dont think every hen is as close to their breed's standard as they should be. A lot of us are further along with the roosters than we are with the hens (maybe in both breeds?) so I think that makes for confusion. Plus, they are sort of cousins...

I start looking at them 3-6 months.... and again after a year old. Sometimes you will have really typey babies. I keep these the longest.
Sometimes you will have a bird that is lacking in the chest or something, and maturity will fill it out.
Just study the standard, Look at some SQ birds and try to get an eye for them. Go to some shows and check out the birds and the differences between them. Post pics or talk to other breeders and see what you can learn, and then you will be able to spot quality!

Is there a good place to find a list of upcoming shows?

I am plucking out almost an entire wing....I'll race you !

Hee hee! Let me know how that goes too Liz!
Ever done it before?

I'm spreading out the plucking over a couple of weeks, both for comfort and to stagger the growing in. Here he is now, with having a couple plucked already. I'm hoping they grow back in for the fall shows. He's probably my nicest bird, but I've never considered his show potential because of his ratty feathers. They've looked that way since I got him last November! I see his feathers lying around, so I know he molts, but these have stayed put.

For Local Shows---Contact your local agricultural center or extension office....find breeders in your area....see if you can find a local poultry group in your area (Like here we have Bluegrass Poultry Assn. They have a website and Yahoo! Group.) Google, post an ad in Craigslist.org Farm and Garden Area, Post or look at ads at your local feed stores........
For other shows---Contact the Breed Association-- Like SCNA for Seramas, and see when they are having shows. Contact your districts rep. This should help out a lot.

There are some big shows every year too. Like I got to the Columbus Nationals. Its huge and there are a TON of birds there.

I must be insane! I have 38 Serama eggs in the bator! Not sure why I put myself through this( I just gave away 14 chicks), but I couldn't let the girls go broody again with fair right around the corner, so I started gathering eggs and it seemed such a wasted to toss them in the trash, so in the bator they went. Talk to ya'll in about 19 days, probably begging for some takers for Serama chicks!
