How do you all house your Seramas?

I live where it easily gets down to -20 below in the winter, though the usual temps are around 0 at night to 30 in the daytime. I have a nice building (unheated) with lots of bedding and good roosts for my standard hens to live in, and I shut the door every night to keep everyone safe. If I had Seramas in this setup, what changes would I need to make?

Thanks for the nice comments on my latest chicks. I just weighed the littlest guy, the lighter one with the really dark stripes, and at a week old, he weighs a whopping 0.5 ounces

I'm hoping they are both nice, typey pullets

Right now I have 3 cockerels, 1 pullet and 2 that are too young to tell yet. They are 23 days old, it's possible there is 1 pullet and 1 cockerel of those 2 but sometimes the little cockerels suddenly sprout a red comb when you think you have them figured out. The only thing I'm sure of is that those that look like cockerels are for sure cockerels. Oh and ad to that the new chicks from Jerry's eggs.

I have a couple of Araucana chicks that hatched yesterday and one of them is a biggen,

, weighed in at 1.5 ounces when dried and fluffed after hatching, 3 times the weight of the little week old chick. That still amazes me.

I only have two Seramas and they come in the house at night, every night and I live in Southern California. ONLY in the summer would I keep them out 24/7 (unless we were watching TV together). I feel they are too small to stay in those kind of temperatures. Hope that helps........

Do you have a bird cage, dog crate, what, for them?

This was my second attempt hatching eggs. I only have two hens laying so some of the eggs were a bit old but I threw them in any way. I didn't think I would have much luck because the temp fluctuates a lot in this old house. There were three out of four fertile Serama eggs to hatch on my first attempt...one just stopped developing.
They started hatching last weekend and 14 of them hatched....I was shocked because I was just expecting maybe a couple to hatch...lolol...Even though I was checking them, I lost one to pasty butt.

I had been so caught up with the new chicks I hadn't unplugged the incubator so I did that Tuesday night. Wed night after cleaning and feeding them, one chick was chirping loud. I kept trying to find it but they all looked ok.
It was driving Dottie my mother hen Dachshund crazy and she was driving me crazy....lolol...She kept going to the incubator which was sitting by the brooder and whining. I finally checked the brooder and there was a little chick running around screaming bloody murder...lolol..so I'm back up to 14 chicks. I really feel bad because there was also another one that had piped but it didn't make it out of the shell. I'll know next time not to unplug it without checking the eggs first.

The humidity was between 40/50% and once it dropped down to 38%. Hatching was at 60/65%. I'm not sure what it was when the last one hatched...I was too busy getting the chick out to notice...lolol

Good luck on your hatch!!

WHY do you have what looks like bandaids on some of the chicks feet? Are their toes, curled, or what? How long do you leave them on?

I made 2 cages. One is the evening cage (larger) so they can hang out with me and there is a smaller one in my bedroom for sleeping. I know, they are SO spoiled! Large cage measures 23" x 19" by 20" high. Good size for two. EZE to make cage also. If you are handy with a saw and wood,I would be more then happy to show ya how.

This week's chicks...

Do you let them run around the house? If so, do you diaper them?

I'm hatching a lot right now, but when I select down to my breeders for the next generation, I'm sure I'll have some "extras." I'm getting lots of brown and/or chocolate ones right now.
