My first chick out of Truffles and Blu-T is pipped! There won't be any chocolates with this cross but the cockerels will be split for chocolate and one of the lucky fellas will be kept to breed back to Truffles.

I'll post (probably tomorrow) when the chick hatches, hoping for a cockerel!

Well, 2 were Truffles eggs and 2 were Bugsy's, no clue why but the other 3 died just before pipping. I candled them and saw no movement so I pipped the egg and checked and they were already dead.

The one is Truffles though, doesn't look black though so it could possibly be from the rooster she was with before Blu-T which was a very nice cocopop rooster, or a wheaten out of Blu-T since it was within a month after I got the hens that I set these eggs. I have more of Truffles under Bugsy and now Truffles is setting on some too so I'm hoping for a better hatch next time.

I'll take pics tomorrow. Should be fluffed and dried by then.
Thanks for checking in
Cathy

Does anyone have pics of a cocopop chick? This chick is either cocopop or wheaten. Not out of the shell yet but definitely non black. Timing wise, it could be by my rooster Blu-T or the rooster she was with before I brought her home and he was laced cocopop.

If it's a cockerel, I'm assuming it would still be a split for chocolate? If it's a cockerel, he will be for sale. If a pullet, I'll hold her a while to determine if I want to add her to the cocopop pen. We'll see in about a month

This is how my wheatens hatch, all yellow.

This has been the lightest of my chocolates. She's growing up to be fairly dark, though.

Looks a lot like Truffles chick. All yellow, not quite fluffed up enough to see the down color well but there is a hint of darker color on the yellow, maybe. I'll just have to wait till it's dried better, maybe tomorrow.

I just took this, not the best picture. Hoping it's a cockerel. Can someone who knows the genetics tell me if a wheaten or cocopop rooster out of a chocolate hen will still be split for chocolate? I don't plan to keep this chick. If it's a cockerel, and split for chocolate, maybe he would fit into someone's chocolate breeding flock. I plan to buy a black rooster when the right one comes available for Truffles but until then, I will have some chicks out of her and the cockerels should be useful in breeding for chocolates or start someones project. I'll be offering them at 4 months old. The hens from this cross will not carry chocolate at all and will be sold as well unless there are any that I feel are particularly nice but I don't plan on more than one to keep

Choc hens always give that gene to their sons. The boys will always be split for chocolate if the father doesn't carry the gene. If the father carries it and the mothr is choc/-, the chic's gender won't be apparent by color alone. Both males and females can be chocolate in that scenario.

Thanks, I figured that had to be true but all you see in the chocolate breeding charts are chocolate to black breedings.
I'm hoping this is a cockerel then, he'll still be for sale. I'm hoping to find a very good, black rooster for Truffles. I will take a little longer to get a visually chocolate chick but the goal is as clean a chocolate as possible with little or no markings. I'm hearing that will be tough to do,
