I just went out and got the smaller black chick that's out at the barn. This one is half the size of the other black chick out there that is obviously a pullet and out of Bugsy, my black hen, and by T-Roo. She is for sale when the weather is cooler to ship.

This chick, I'm hoping is a cockerel. It was hatched June 2nd so it's over a month old but I'm still not certain of the sex. It's tiny. It also came from T-Roo's pen and was back when Truffles was with him as well as my black hen Bugsy so I might think it could be hers but I believe it's Truffles chick because the other one has very black legs like Bugsy and this one has swarthy legs like Truffles. T-Roo has pale legs. In any case, I am really hoping this chick is Truffles baby and he's a keeper.

Not nearly as obvious a comb as the previous chick that I posted that's 21 days old but if this chick is a cockerel, then he's got a much smaller comb too. Even if it's a pullet, and it probably is, I definitely like this chick and then all I need is the chocolate chick to be a cockerel.

Well it was a roo ... She is great we swapped out & seeing the others my one I kept looks a little rooish too ... But looks to be a mottled chocolate .. I may keep " him" & rehome the roo I have now... What to do what to do ...

I think one of the rare color and hard to breed for is a pure chocolate cock it will take sometime but I think we can do it I have chocolate cause of my cocoapop projects but I think I will try and breed out a pure chocolate rooster just chocolate and I believe its going to be hard ...

Hatching birds does not make a person an expert. Years of experience and learning does. Mites are easily treated. I seriously doubt you have had these birds long enough to infect your entire flock. Did you put them straight in without checking them or quarantining them for 30 days?

If you don't want them to hatch chicks and you want them to quit laying you could get some dummy eggs for them to sit on when they go broody. After a few weeks they'd quit the broodiness and start laying again, but at least they wouldn't have any babies. Or you could let them set only 1 egg, that way you'd only have 1 more mouth to feed and mama wouldn't start laying again until after the baby's grown up.
