Slow down, before we have to intervene! You'll be all stocked up before I have birds to sell you!

i actually have a sad update on the two silkied seramas that were bieng shipped, the seller was not home so is dad packed the birds up and shipped them and he put cedar shavings in with them they were in a poorly ventalated box with the toxic fumes from the shavings for a day and a half, so they are doing really bad, they are inside with a space heater and electrolytes and im really hoping they make a full recovery

I don't think I have posted any pics here but just in case i'm sorry if i have.
Heres some of my seramas
I wish i could find my camera so i coud have some recent pics

I'm so sorry that your birds are sick, Austin! I don't know anything about cedar toxcisity (I can't even spell it), but I wonder if they need bathed? Maybe there is sap that will irritate and soak through the skin.

Poultryhaven, that little partridgey chick turned black?!?!? I can't wait to see a picture of that. I'm also looking foreward to see the chicks that those white silkied birds make; you know I want them......

Austinhart123, sorry to hear about the condition of your silky seramas. I hope they do well.

"An Introduction to the Serama Bantam" by Carrie Wright published in 2009 in England states: History of the Serama Bantam... "Wee Yean Een's early facination with chickens encouraged him to pursue his dream." It goes on to say that he aquired Ayam Kapans and wanted to enhance the compact bone structure so used Silkie Bantams and later bred out the five toes and feathered legs. It notes these traits occationally do crop up. He then used the Ayam Jepun (japanese bantam) to help with the erect tail of the Serama. By 1988 they were being produced at 500 grams or less. Now that he was producing birds to his liking he named them Serama Bantam after his love of shadow puppets where a character Raja Sri Rama was a favorite. It was around that time that he sold off much of his surplus birds. It was a great success and in 1990 the first birds became so well known that the first Serama Bantam Show took place in Malaysia. Soon they became so popular that they spread to Thailand and Singapore with shows more than weekly.

i hadnt thought of that, im more concered that the fumes might have cuased brain damage, i still have the box they were shipped in and i had my sister stick her head in the box and breathe becuase she didnt understand how shavings could affect their health, she was coughing after a few secods, i told her that the birds were in there for two days with the top shut and they have smaller lungs than us, im hoping they get better

I do not have any Seramas but I am interested in them greatly.
Are they easy to raise?
Can they go with other standard hens?
Are they friendly?
Can they go into any coop?
Is there a good coop design that would work for them?
There is a guy near our house that sells them for about 3.00 a chick.
Do you think those are good chicks?

Thanks!

Matthew
