and he went straight for the coop. I came outside to a big smile holding a gorgeous little princess egg

FINALLY! I guess the heat had gotten to her... anyway, I was so mad at her, I almost handed her over to my 3 yr. old... cause he loves her sooooo much

She lucked out this time! and she's safe from being cuddled to death for like another week

If you build them a pen, just build one with a draft-free waterproof shelter (that is easy to clean out) they do fine if they are acclimated to the weather! Then if you are not home during a storm, you dont have to worry about them!

I wish I could give you some good tips about incubating eggs. I cheat a lot using my broody cochins. Sometimes Ill have the cochin set on serama eggs for 10 days to get them a good start, and them move them into the incubator. I do this three times, and then break her up so she can have a break and go broody again. Or Ill do one batch like that and let her hatch the second, making sure she is eating a lot and not losing weight. I do a lot of praying. lol

To weigh them I use a food scale similar to this one. You can zero out the weight if you need to use a box for a young flighty bird, and I have been thinking about getting a piece of that no slip stuff you put in cabinet bottoms for it for the birds that will stand still.

I think I got mine for free from friends who never weighed their food, lol but they are 15 bucks or so I think.

WELL CONGRATS! I hope its got all the right stuff inside for ya! See if that were me, and was anxiously awaiting an egg. I'd trip and fall with it one that way to the house.
Oh boy using the little one over lovin to get what you need. Hmmm is that a form of chicken blackmail? If so its working:) maybe you should write a book "How to Get What You Need from your Poultry" Front cover- little boy loving to death a chicken:)
Eyeballs bulging looking very panicked

I had a very pleasant surprise wake me up this morning. It looked like popcorn went off in the bator. 21 chicks had hatched so far with more still pipping. Most are seramas (all but two are Ransom chicks), and there are some modern, brahma, araucana, and one silkied chick that hatched later this morning.

Here they are in the brooder:

I have the brooder wrapped because they all hatched 2 days early and it wasn't up to temp, so I wrapped it to get the temp regulated quicker, so that's the ugly blanket you see through the back of the brooder.

I've got a very interesting deep, deep red, almost a black red, down color in one of my serama chicks from Ransom, who is a silver pumpkin. I can't wait to see what this one colors up as.

Hee hee! Popcorn! That was great.

I cant wait to see a little silver pumpkin grow either.
Congrats on your hatch HRR!
(I didnt even notice the blanket, the cuteness of the chicks was too distracting! lol)

Bluegrass, we have Bantam Cochins as well as Silkies, would you choose any one breed over the other for 'foster-starts' for the eggs? There is another lady who lives here in Mo. that we've been talking to about her Seramas and I think she does the same thing. I'm hoping to purchase from her as well this yr. I want to gather a nice gene pool and then focus on breeding for standard, and play with the colors, we'd really like to show at some point ...I would LOVE to see a splash or Lavender Serama!!! Wouldn't that be just beautiful? Ok so has probably already been done but I've not seen it yet...I'm talking lavender w/ dk blue lacing .....I just think that would be so special!! I'm quite simple (and easily amused), but LOVE to learn as much as I can about genetics and how they work, so I read and read and read.

btw... lil' DaVinci is now crowing at us when we leave the room lol He has to work up to crowing but once he gets that lil' motor started he is ALL wound up!! lol

On a lil' different subject (but still about him) have you ever paid attn. to their combs while crowing?? Not sure if this is cause for concern or just normal but DaVinci's comb is light red, when he is being held he seems to relax and his comb almost drains of color (turns almost a yellow/pink) but when he gets up and walks around again or starts crowing it's dark red...is there something else he's needing or is he just relaxing SO much that his bp is going way down?? I'll be the first to say that I'm a worry wort but especially with our babies we love them so much that we don't want to loose them.

HighRoost Ranch: Congrat's on the cute lil' fuzzy butts!!! They are adorable!! Ty for sharing them with us.

I use both, but lost my pure Silkie last year. My favorites are the Cochin Silkie crosses. ( I call them "the mogwai" from Gremlins, cause they are so cute and have mohawks.

) I think any smallish bantam would work.

I love all the colors too. I need to get new blood in my line and hope to get some neat colors. I traded birds with Dianne of Paradise Seramas, and hope when I get to pick a hen, its a super neat colored one.

I dont think I have ever noticed that. You will have to let us know if you find out anything else.....

Congrats on the early hatch Julie! I asked Abbey that same question awhile ago and she isn't from North Branch MN. Have you moved here already? I hope ya like it here
