Folks, this is a good discussion, so we'll let it go for now - but keep up the namecalling and it'll soon be shut down. Consider this a warning.

I just wanted to share that I am getting a Serama trio this Thursday..
I am super excited!

My girls are really gettin to laying again! I'm gettin an egg a day from each girl despite the heat, it's great!

Also, am I right to assume that Seramas carry true with the whole "you shouldn't breed a frizzle to a frizzle" rule because of fray? The feed store I go to has a pair of frizzled seramas for sale. The male is perfect type but his feathers look so messy, the female isn't a great type but her feathers are perfect frizzle. I was thinking about buying the female but while I was standing there debating I was trying to explain to the lady that they shouldn't be paired up together because 2 frizzles shouldn't breed. She kind of got huffy and asked my why not, they would produce 100% frizzle chicks, I tried to tell her they should be paired with a non frizzle and she said "but that would make only 50% frizzle" and I tried to explain about fray and the birds going bald and she just looked at me like I was retarted.

Come to think of it... the people there aren't the wisest about chickens. I recall seeing another pair of smooth feathered serama for sale there, $60 each or $100 for the pair. I remember they were pretty big, definitly a class C, and they didn't look very typey and I commented that I thought the price was too high. I brought one of my seramas in, a class A, easily a third the size of those. The lady I spoke with just kind of gave me a "big deal" attitude like I was there trying to show off or something.

That same hen had a "Not For Sale" sign on her cage a few days later and I noticed she was setting quite comfortably. I asked if she was no longer for sale because she went broody, the girl responded, "No, I think shes sitting on eggs." .......... Well, for a better lack of a response I asked if I could bring some of my serama eggs for her to sit on. Again the girl astounded me with "She's already sitting on eggs." ............. I came back a few days later with 3 eggs, carefully marked, and grabbed a manager this time. Since these people were pretty much clueless anyway I asked if I could set the eggs under the hen. He offered to do it for me so I wouldn't get pecked. He then took the eggs and placed them in her cage about 4 inches away from her. I told him he needed to put the eggs UNDER her. He was worried about getting pecked. I offered to do it myself but he finally buckled down and did it, and ya know what? He had every right to fear that mother's wrath! Finally a smart one!

I'm not sure I'd be buying 'anything' poultry from them. If they are that brilliant the chickens cannot be getting very good care taken of them. lol Bless your heart for trying to educate them' unfortunately there are some who either think 'they know it all' or 'don't care to know at all' .

All I can tell you about the frizzled gene is from of course reading on here and other places. Maybe someone who's bred that gene indepth can educate both of us. I think it's that if you breed frizzle to frizzle the shafts are very brittle but everything you breed them will give 100% frizzle offspring that will carry 50% gene....you have to be careful with the 100% frizzle from what I understand as they will sometimes loose all feathering and have nothing to protect their body during cold or breedings or anything else for that matter.
Please do double check with someone who breeds frizzles tho' !!

I have a Silkie and a Cochin raising Seramas right now. Cochin momma is great, Silkie momma is amazing! Phyllis lets her babies ride around on her back! Only one problem, though, and nobody else has ever heard of it -- her long twiny feathers wrap around the babies necks. When they first hatched, I would pick Phyllis up and give her a shake; little chicks would fall out of the fluff, but sometimes one was hanging by her neck, and I'd have to pluck the feather to unwrap it. Only one died that way, but constant vigilance was required. She is now trimmed of her feathers of death, and although she looks ridiculous now (she would have been a great show bird had she been a standard color), she's the best mom!

!!!!!!!!!Feathers of Death!!!!!!!

Who knew?! Silkies should now come with a warning! lol
I dont think I had a very good silkie. I got her as a broody so it didnt matter, but she kinda had this "drowned rat" look all the time.
It didnt help she was this dingy grey color that was suppose to be blue splash.
Didnt have to worry about death by feathers though!

Beware the Silkie Feathers of Death!!!!!!!

I think that's why the remaining two chicks ride on her back, to stay away from them!

Neat!
I haven't really noticed that before, but Ill be looking!
Although I love all mine and have favorites, not many are handled or cuddled as much for me to notice (and I always fall for the hens anyways.) The pic of the roo sleeping all cuddled up was toooo cute! Might have to fall for a roo soon!
I have been jaded since I lost my little Telula, who followed me everywhere, and since then, I have not had a personal pet. (RIP Telula!

I love

BYC for the same reasons I love the SCNA...and even my other chicken groups-------- there is lots to learn from people all over the world, and its a great place to meet like-minded people and share your enthusiasm for your birds. (Oh! And share pics too!

)
If anyone is a puppet for wanting to be in a group of like minded people--so be it. I dont care. I'm in every serama group I can find! I dont care who is who and I don't care about politics much either. There are more interesting things to spend my time on.

I'm here to learn and have fun. (Thank you so so so much for the compliments TsaLaGi and Friedeggs--I do work hard with our line to produce better. I dont think Im the best by any means, but I would rather do it on my own than to just buy birds..and even though my birds are not the best in the world, I'm really proud of each generation! )

I know my DH would probably rather drill a hole through his hand--- rather than be forced to feign anymore interest in me talking about birds or what I have learned in a chicken book. I think I'm lucky to be able to be online and talk to so many different people, and find out about different meets or shows, which is like this-- but in person! Even better, I think! I feel that being here in the age of the internet is a blessing!
