I think I may finally have my chocolate Serama!!!! It's 10 days old, and I am aware a lot can change, but it's been brown since it hatched and now look at it's feathers!!!

It's ironic, because I hadn't planned on doing any hatching. I had one of my little ladies decide to go broody, I got her some eggs, but by the time they arrived, she didn't want to sit any longer, so I fired up my homemade incubator and only got this one spoiled rotten little cutie.

Opinions? Do you think it will stay brown?

If it is chocolate, and you don't have any chocolate hens, it's a girl! Hens only need one choc gene, and they can only get it from their fathers. Cocks need two genes to show up, and they need it from both parents.

I get chocolates every now and then, but I forget what they look like as chicks. I am going to start taking pics of chick down, if it's anything other that plain yellow, and compare them to adult plumage. I'll make it into a BYC page when I get it going.

Mr. Mongold has the descriptions on the SCNA site but no pictures. Might be useful for both sites...

I don't know what the parents are. I purchased these eggs on ebay when my little pullet was broody then changed her mind, so I put them in the incubator and this is the only one of 9 eggs to make it. I hope its a girl, so she can go in with Roosevelt (in my profile photo) and Eleanor which I hatched from your eggs in Jan, I also have Lily that hatched later in Jan.

Here's my only chocolate right now. Typey enough to merit an SCNA legband, but quite a mess, as far as color goes. Choc doesn't dilute red, so she has leakage as well as some sort of wheaten? pattern. About 7 weeks old.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed everyday this baby stays the color it is!

Tell me about SCNA leg bands, please. What is the difference in them and just a regular band? I'm so new to this I really need to read up.

They're the same size as the smallest ABA band, and they come in a different color every year. They cost about $.50 each, and the SCNA has a record of who has what numbers. That way, When you come across a bird with a band, you can look up who bred it. Of course, this system falls apart when you sell or trade bands..... A numbered band is required for birds in a show, but it doesn't matter what kind it is. I probably won't buy any more, unless the SCNA comes up with a prize incentive for winning birds who are wearing their bands.
