Yeagin1,
Thanks! That's exactly what I'm expecting from mine too. It's a little confusing though, my chicks were not the tuxedo colored down either. I can't think of any better term to call yours except mottled though and nice ones at that. Mine aren't getting any black feathers in to replace the brown ones yet, just white, so it's going to be really fun to see what they turn out like. There is so much white coming in they may end up white! Now that would really freak me out, and further confuse me lol

Shouldn't much longer and I'll be able to post more photo's and I'll put the chick down, juvenile, first feathering then the newest one on one post to show the crazy progression. Maybe the chick down doesn't have anything to do with the mottling? just the base color?

I'm still waiting for my teeny chicks to feather out more. I haven't named the larger one yet but the teen one is Button. It has the palest yellow down (nearly white) of any chicks I've hatched and the black is a bold black, not faded and strong lines.

Here is my latest project.

A seram/cochin cross hen. I am developing them more, cause I like the look.

I don't have any pics showing his chick down but he pretty much came out of the shell looking like that...even with a small comb and altitude...lolol..For some reason my puter wouldn't recognize my camera when using my USB and I had to get a reader before I could load any pics.

Here's just a few of the new chicks that I had just taken out of the incubator. I think they'll have some interesting colors too. I'm about to take more pics and will post them to see what you think. Some are full siblings of the cockerel but none that looked like him. He just had a different look about him that none of the other chicks have.
I always give them egg yoak and oatmeal for their first meal and later as treats.

What are you trying to accomplish with this mix?

The Fluff of a bantam cochin and the compact size of a serama. I wanted to combine the two. I have had a couple of requests for eggs which is more incentive to breed them.

I would definitely love some eggs when you start selling them.

Totally agree, at most you'd need to worm them every 4 months but that's only if you have a lot of worms in your ground AND you keep them on the ground. I don't think you do, do you Liz? Keep yours on the ground? I think most people worm twice a year, in the spring and fall

Sandy,
Thanks

These chicks are out of him so I was hoping some might be just like him. The younger 2 of his chicks aren't showing enough feathers to guess anything about them yet but I think one of them is a pullet and the other, well obviously lol, a cockerel. Of the first 4, 3 are cockerels and one a pullet. I'm still way under for hens so I'll keep these until I have even better pullets than they are and I'll begin to sell some hens with a rooster, maybe as soon as late summer, we'll see. I only want 4 pairs or trios so I will have some young adults to sell then.

I've traded my black barred/cuckoo cockerel and a few hatching eggs for 2 pullets from my friends hen. She's got a very nice little hen who's been laying but no rooster. She lives nearly 2 hours away but works in Springfield so that's just 30 min from me so we can do some swapping. I gave her my little Serama/Araucana cross pullet and she's a lap chicken now and lives inside and has a sunroom

I told her when ever she has some hatch and can tell the pullets from the cockerels that she can pick me out a couple of girls, I think it will be fun and I was so happy to be able to help her get a really nice start. The more you share, the more you'll get back
