A 12.5 oz. pullet is PLENTY big enough to be a good layer. Most of mine are that or less. Also, if she is still a pullet she may not be done growing. Only way to find out is wait and see.

Those are way too big, I don't think I'd use them at all. If a cock bird was maybe 1 ounce over the limit I'd probably use him, but not 3, 4, 5 ounces over. Just my opinion.

I agree

But that doesn't mean you have to part with them, they make excellent pets

My big boy bernie is the rooster I use to take to schools for the kids to handle and learn about.

And thats why we are eating their eggs now. Bite sized hardboiled Yum! I will re-home most and keep 1 or 2 pairs for pets. My kids don't want to let any go but....
I am looking for hatching eggs from good quailty birds or maybe buy a nice young pair.

I think one of the biggest problems is the not knowing if a person really wants to know the truth. Please understand that this my personal preference and others may or maynot agree . They really lack in type.

They also make yummy pickled eggs. Mix them in with a batch of quail eggs for pickling and you're all set. I'm still waiting for my hen to lay more frequently. I have one egg in the bator that's developing.

I've never eaten a quail egg. Hmmmm....something new to hatch.
I have to look up pickling receipes.........pickled serama eggs.

Oh Lord! I made it. It took me days but I finally read the whole thread. I am supposed to go and pick up my first pair of seramas this weekend.

I can already see that it's going to be really hard not too go crazy with them. I already have my heart set on a decent quality solid white roo. Now I just have to find one! And a girlfriend of a different color for him too. I have really enjoyed looking at all your pictures and reading all your vast amounts of information. I'm so excited!

ETA: I know you guys are a big bunch of enablers so if anybody has a white roo or knows who does, you'd better fess up. These are for pets but I might like to breed a little in the future, so I'd like some nice looking birds. And I won't mind if they are a little big. They'll still be tiny to me!

Thats great news dianaross77, you will become enthralled with them! I keep mine in the house at night and we watch TV, have quality time while I'm on the PC and eat meals together. They are addictive, so beware......

Thanks froggie! Am I right in thinking yours are housepets? If so, what do you keep yours in? I just bought a big wire dog crate on ebay for mine. It'll fit a 36x24 inch mixing tub in it, so it'll be like a BIG guinea pig/rabbit cage. I just couldn't stand having them in anything smaller. But then again, our rabbit has a 28x42 inch 2 story condo!

I moved my older, feathered chicks out to the barn with the other Serama's today. They have a light and it's warm enough for them but they have had to have had a bit of culture shock, going from the big guys in the brooder to little pee ons with the roosters crowing at them from their cages, poor babies. They seem pretty settled in already tonight and have a lot more to see after being in the brooder with solid walls. I've been out several times to check on them and they're snug as little bugs under their light.
