I don't want to start anything but basically are you saying if we (general Serama lovers) can't make or add to the perfection of the bird we shouldn't have Seramas at all or shouldn't sell them to others who do want them? If so, I think that's a bit uppity. Sorry to be blunt but that's the way I am. There are a lot of people who simply love the breed for what it is same as they love every other breed of chicken. They want a house pet, they want to have a little flock of Seramas, whatever. I agree people should not be selling pet quality birds as show quality - that is just false advertising, but I don't think everyone who has Seramas "needs" to be breeding for perfection or contributing to the perfection as you said. Now if this is not what you meant, then I am sorry and retract my blunt statement.

I've had a lot of different animals in my lifetime and each time if it was something I was wanting to breed, the first thing I did was to read the SOP and learn everything I could about the breed then get the best breeding quality I could find.....horses dogs or chickens. You produce a lot of PQ while trying to produce SQ...cull the pet and breed your best.

I now have two rescued dogs that I love very much. Both were bred by backyard breeders who bred pets to produce more pets. Both have overbites that make it very hard for them to eat. It doesn't mean I love them any less for their faults but I would never ever breed them because of it.

I also have pet Seramas that will never be bred because of their faults. No animal is perfect but I can't see breeding anything without trying to breed for improvement. That goes for any of the breeds, not just Seramas.
The Standard of Perfection is used as a guide as to how the different breeds should look.

Agreed!

I don't have seramas and know only what I read on this site but, I have been lead to believe that there are two types of show serama - Malaysian which is very exaggerated as far as type, and an American form which is more relaxed. If this is true a top American type Serama could be close to perfection even tho it isn't a replica of a top Malaysian bird. Am I totally wrong in this assumption?

I used to breed and showCocker spaniels(successfully) there were breeders that would exaggerate type ie., if a short muzzle was desired, they would breed till they approached a pekingese. If heavy coat was the object they overdid till the dog couldn't walk without tripping over it's coat. They were breeding AWAY from the standard until their "type" became what was sought at, at the dog shows.

But again, you really shouldn't say "everyone". Not everyone wants perfect. I don't, never will and honestly, there is nothing "perfect" in this world

I agree, eveyone does not want perfect! But would you buy a chicken of another breed that was not at least close to where it should be?

Yes, people do that everyday, it's called hatchery stock. People have chickens for different reasons. Personally, I try to breed the best birds I can, and I do show. It will be the same with my Seramas, BUT I have to start with what I can get, not everyone can afford $300+ / bird prices. Maybe if someone wants everyone to have fantastic birds for others to drool over, they should lower their prices a tad so more people can afford them.

I'm not saying undercut oneself, but he shouldn't complain when people have lesser birds because they can't afford his perfect stock.

Why can't there be the select group of people breeding for perfection and showable birds and the others that just enjoy the breed and love their pretty little American Serama birds? What is so wrong with that? That just makes the birds bred to standard that much more 'special' or whatever.

Maybe us owners of non-standard, low quality Seramas, should have our own Serama Forum for posting our pics and discussing our favorite little birds and show breeders can have their own. I wonder if a mod could maybe move all the sub quality photos from this thread to another thread or rename this one and start a new Malaysian Serama thread?

Whatever will make everyone happy!

I agree with the comment that there will never be peace between show breeders and average breeders and really think it should be left at that. It is like that with every type of animal. I have pure bred cats - they will never live up to the standards set by breeders of those cats, but they are pure breeds anyway and bought from breeders. It seems that SQ breeders are never truly happy with their product. Maybe that is just the nature of the beast? I don't know. I personally am in awe of Jerry's birds and wish that I had the money and the time to put into a Serama breeding project. Alas, I have neither so I'm settling for my little flock of imperfects

I think feathers just got ruffled with this subject because of the way it originally came across to some of us. I love seeing everyone's birds - EVERYONE'S - and I hope that this thread does not get converted to a place where average owners/breeders do not feel comfortable posting because they aren't up to standards.

Hey all,
Let's not ruin this thread. Show breeders, pet breeders and rescuers of imperfect animals NEVER agree ........ no matter what the breed( chickens, dogs, cats...................).

Let's go back to enjoying our pictures and just ignore anyone who may drop by to make an occasional insult every few months.

Negative feelings about any certain breeder really does not need to be discussed here.

I agree with that, but maby the breeders of SQ serama should have a thread just for the SQ so people can see the differences!

Do what you want, but I don't think that's right. Why should there be the segregation? It's just going to make people feel bad. I have SQ Faverolles, but I don't tell people on the Faverolles thread with hatchery birds that their birds are not good enough, and they should go start another thread somewhere else. People have eyes, and brains in their heads, they can SEE that their birds aren't as nice as Jerry's, they don't need to be scolded and segregated for it.

I personally don't care what anyone else thinks about my birds, but I don't want any newbies to the breed, site or this thread to feel intimidated about posting. I don't think that is what BYC is all about, breed thread or not. I say we need more baby photos......here are a few of my new ones
