What worked for me when I got two new birds, was to put them in a large bird cage, and keep them where they would see me, and I would talk to them often. I didn't try to touch or hold them the first week, but instead, got them used to me, the sound of my voice, being there, bringing food, cleaning up after them etc. After about a week, I'd reach in and hold them for a few minutes, then put them back. Slowly I handled them a little bit more, and in return also gave them more and more freedom, so now I can let them roam the house, or the run and we don't have to chase them down. They don't run away from me anymore. Chasing and netting them will likely stress them more than being confined in a smaller area (IMO). They are naturally friendly birds, it only took about a month for mine to be nice and tame. Bribes like mealworms help too.

Hi.
I'm thinking of getting a few seramas as pets, not show. I have a cage where I could keep them indoors, as well as a tractor so they can be outdoors. i haven't decided if i want them to be indoor or outdoors yet. I'd be getting 2-3 hens. No roosters, can't have crowing, even though serama roos are gorgeous!

so i'm trying to decide the best way to get what i want. there's an ad on craigslist for seramas that are about an hours drive, and not very expensive. I'm not sure if they're very good examples of the breed. while i don't need them to be show quality, i'd still like them to conform to the general type. i want them to look like seramas, not just tiny chickens, if that makes sense. here is the ad: http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/grd/2404812622.html

any input on these birds?

I am very novice, but it looks like there may be a couple that look okay, more like the type you'd want to see, while most of them just look like small chickens. Price is right, so if I were just wanting pets I think it'd be worth it to drive out and see them. But I would also do some searching and see if you can find a quality breeder that is within driving distance. They often have really nice pet quality birds. JMHO. I'm sure someone better versed on Serama type can help you more though!

I would try keeping them in a smaller space for awhile. Would NOT chase them with a net or chase them period, that would be very stressful.

Mine are in the house, so get used to me being around all the time and my noise and voice. I handle them when cleaning and feeding.

Scared birds take a bit to tame down if they have never been handled but they should get better.

If you need to keep them outside at least divide their run down into a smaller area where you can interact with them.

Thanks! I have the upper half of a dog kennel in there and they pretty well stay in there. Yesterday I just sat in the pen with them and pushed them out of that corner and they did move about some and didn't seem petrified, but didn't come close either. I really don't want to net them. I don't even own a net right now. Just need to be able to inspect them for mites, etc.
