OMG he looks EXACTLY like my late rooster whitey! Oh how I miss that stinker
Whitey took over a year to show me his full potential. For months before that I thought he was nothing special til he came out of his shell. Gorgeous roo ya got there
I tooo was out in the yard the other day watching the flock. This little pullet is 4 months old, not sure on weight yet but she is very small, typey and tame. I have named her madeline. I have never had this color and lacing come up in any of the breedings I have done in the past 3 years or so. Due to the low demand for this breed in the area I will no longer be working with seramas, the birds I have now are here to live out their lives. The last small hatch I did consisted of 2 cochins and 1 serama .... alll 3 are roosters, there lies most of the problems, for 2 years in a row I have had 90% or better be cockerels. Ya literally can't give them away lately
So from now on I will share pics of my existing birds and drool over everyone elses
Here is madeline, she is not posing obviously but when she does the camera is nowhere to be found of course

Not sure if this is relevant but reading the "hatching literature" found a few interesting gems:
1. older eggs hatch later, about 1 hour for each day delay in setting after laying
2. older eggs hatch out smaller chicks. Figures if they have been using their yolk resources for longer.
3. Also as we suspect, older eggs have a lower rate of starting to develop and hatching fully formed chicks.
I was able to test this (in a small way) when was sent a couple of dozen eggs that were dated and layed over a 2 week period. It seemed to be accurate.
So when I get a bunch of undated eggs that hatch over a period of 2 days, (and have many that do not hatch) I do wonder how old they are.
That's very cool Phage! So, I have a broody sitting on 1 egg that she laid the day she started sitting, and I gave her one egg that was about 2 weeks old....but had about a 20 hour head start in the incubator... so they should likely hatch about the same time, with the older egg hatching a smaller chick? I'll let you know what becomes of the two chicks. Hatch date this upcoming Sunday is my best guess.
