I have had chickens ever since I was 9! But all though I had them for about 8 years, only about 5 months ago did I start raising chicks! But I still don't know how to tell if they are female or male.. I have a new batch of 6 that are about one month old, can anyone help me determine their gender? Thanks!!

Can you post some pics of them? We can try, but they may be too young to tell.

What breeds do you have?

Line up all your chicks and compare combs. If you have any cockerels, their combs will be noticeably more yellow in color than the pullets whose combs will be a very, very pale pink.

In another week, you'll see the yellow on the boys' combs turn more of a yellow-orange. A week after that, the combs will be leaning more toward orange. By age six weeks, if you have any cockerels, their combs will be noticeably red-orange.

All this time, the pullets' combs will have remained a washed out pale pink. Pullets will not start to have red combs until they are nearing point of lay around five or six months, give or take according to breed.

These are the pictures, please see what you can make of them :)

Also one of the white ones ,(the two whites are broilers, in the front) has a big bright red comb, and a long tail, does that make it a girl? the other has a pale yellowish pink comb that's also big but has a short stubby tail and is taller than the other.

The 4 red chickens (dont know the name of the type) 2 of them seem to be girls cause they have short legs long tails and small combs, but one red has a smal comb but ling legs and a stubby tail? the last red one has a dotted pattern, has a long tail but a big red comb? they are confusing me lol

The ones with the bright red combs are cockerels and the ones with the pale pink combs are pullets. At this age, length of tails have little to do with anything. The cockerels will have longer, thicker legs, though, than the pullets.

does the length if the comb matter? or the size of the chicken?
