Male or female coturnix quail

Hold the bird upside down breast toward you in one hand take your thumb from free hand and put it on the base of the tail and gently push it toward the birds back. If it is a male and ready to breed it will shoot out a foam stream. Kinda like the old foamy shaving cream.

Males
Thank you! I think I'll try vent checking them if I have a one that is questionable. I have 5 eggs in the incubator. Hoping I didn't disrupt them too much and they keep laying. I need more females to have enough to feed our family. :fl

To avoid staggering your hatches you can save eggs from your hens every day for about a week with no loss of fertility if you keep them under 70 degrees. I have a small cooler with blue ice and a slanted wire rack above it for the boxes of eggs as I collect them; I keep the lid of the cooler ajar and it stays 65 in there. I change out the blue ice once in the morning and once in the evening and turn the eggs (tilt them the other way but keep the large sides of the eggs up for the air cells) four or five times a day. The I set them in the incubator all at once.

Thanks! This sounds great. I did not realize I could do this. I've only gotten one egg a day until yesterday I got 2 eggs.
