You'll know soon enough. While they are still ducklings the peep and chirp like little birds. When they are almost out of the duckling stage...have feathers and are big enough to be put outiside in a pen during the day until they acclimate to the yard...they will lose their peep and the female will let out a loud "Quaaaaaack!" The male will give off a whispery seductive "Whiiiir whiiirrr." Also watch for the telltale Drake Tail (two ro three feathers that curl up over the back of the real tail feathers like they are trying to wave down the female's attention. Not all males get this drake tail but Ive never seen a female with one. During the mating season if you see a duck chasing another duck, grab it by the neck and hop on its back, then squats down on top of it...that's a male. Sometimes females impersonate the males by standing on each other's backs and act like they are tryhing to dminate, but they don't connect. They just stand there like okay what now? Hope this helps some of you newbies. I love ducks and I have been raising them for seven years.

Dark one looks female...honking noisly and no drake tail. The other one is still too young to tell. Hasn't lost its chirping and peeping yet.
