I inherited a pair of Pekins male and female. They had been kept in a tiny area prior. I have quite a large pen, but after mating, my male has flown away. I’ve read that they don’t fly. I’ve found him on posted private and unattended property, I located the owner and she insists it’s her last duck (a female) that she released there with four others (since taken by predators) over a year ago. This duck (definitely a drake) answered to me when I called from afar and headed toward me. I do not have permission to retrieve him. Can anyone tell me if there is a chance that he would return home? It’s about two miles away.

:welcome Hard to believe that a Pekin was able to fly and get that far away. If it is him there is a possibility that he may return.
Yes! Everything that I’ve read is to the contrary regarding flying. He may have been taken, but I live in such a secluded area, on a dirt road, I didn’t think that likely. I wish that I could go and get him, he’s thinned out a lot and the thought of predators is heartbreaking.

I have to agree with @sourland. We have a pair of Mallard hens, unlike our larger Rouen/Pekin ducks who are to large to fly. Our Mallard hens who have no trouble flying around the yard, seem to not fly away. I like to think they are happy where they are at and choose not to fly off. :)

Best of luck with your Pekin, I hope he returns home safe to you. :love
