Good grief, it's okay if they shoot her, as long as they wait until the pups are weaned? Have you and the neighbors considered fencing? Even a 10' x 10' dog run for the dog? So she can't get to the chickens?

Oh - nevermind. This is the same dog you threw across the hallway and beat with a broom.

Better to rehome all the dogs.

Didn't mean to make it sound bad but nothing we have done so far has stopped her. She has a pen but somehow she is getting out of that as well. We have looked around it and checked it out but still haven't figured out how she is getting out and neither hubby and I have time to sit down and watch her consently to find out how. Their chicken coop is VERY VERY well designed and they dont know how she is getting into that either. Im at the wit end with her. She dug up the bodies of the 2 chicks (one is Survy andother one I found in the couch) that I was able to bury.
Only reason why I am not getting rid of her and the puppies all together yet, is because 2 friends have requested the pups and had gotten FDAA approval for training the pups for Guide Dogs for the Deaf. If I didn't have those requests, her and the pups would have been rehomed.
hey, this dog jumped over 5 ft tall plywood that was used to block the diningroom to try to keep her in. 3 more weeks, is all Im telling myself, the pups are ready to go in just 3 more weeks!

This is correct. I was a certified technician and now a behaviorist and studied pet foods intensely. Science Diet is poor quality food. The best diets are grain free and most are sold at specialty stores. You can feed foods with grains but be choosy--for example Innova and California Natural. The best diet Petsmart carries is Blue Buffalo. I prefer EVO for my pets but there are a few others. Look for foods without any by products or corn. A pure protein needs to be the first ingredients --usually more than one such as chicken, turkey, beef or chicken meal, etc. For now mix in a good food (or puppy food if you can find nothing else) with her normal diet for 3-5 days to prevent diarrhea and give as much as she wants. Supplement the pups with a puppy milk replacer by alternating a few pups each feeding so they all get some of mom's milk until she starts to gain enough weight. This is very important for her as well as the pups.

Please find them all a home--including the mom. It is less expensive to spay your pets than allow them to breed. Animals need to be treated humanely by giving clear directions so they understand what you want and not by throwing across a room and beating with a broom. Dogs need mental and physical stimulation as well as affection and when they do not have that they do things like jumping over fences and escaping. Not trying to be mean but it seems she is not the right dog for you or your family.

journey's end :

First of all, it's normal to be skin and bones when nursing 8 babies.

No it's not! It's up to us as pet owners to provide the proper nutrition for nursing mothers. They have increased demands on their body, so we must provide them increased nutrition to maintain the proper body condition.

Has she ever went after the chickens up until this point? If not, and she's as thin as you say she is she's probably starving and looking for something to eat. If she's very young she's still growing too so that gives her a double whammy for needing good nutrition. I hope you will take the time to find a way to contain her until the pups are weaned and then try and rehome her with someone who has the time to give her the attention that she deserves.

A quick google search provides lots of information about feeding nursing grump.

You'll find info explaining that nursing grump need to be fed frequent meals, and needs to eat AT LEAST twice the food she was eating before. She should not be skin and bones. They can't get all the nutrition out of just 2 meals....it should really at least 4 meals per day.

*sorry, the filter edited out the word for a female dog.

We are not keeping any of them. We thought of keeping 1 but decided against it. I didn't pull out the broom and toss her down the hall at first. I pulled her back and told her no, even swat her butt when she went at it again. I kept doing that for a while until there was no breaking her focus off them then took the broom out and swat her (not beat her) and it was more of a push that slid her down the hallway. Not even a chain can keep this dog at bay, she has chewed through every known dog chain.

Let me repeat myself, she got 2 science diets a day but I also have another bowl of food that is NEVER EMPTY for her of regular dog food. If it goes empty, it is refilled. I don't normally do that with dogs but I did it with her to add more feed to her.
