No matter how hard we human chicken mamas work to raise chicks in a brooder, we will never equal a real mama hen raising her chicks. She knows just what to do and when to do it. I think it is a shame that the hatcheries and some breeders are breeding out broodiness so the hens don't lose egg production. I don't want my hens to be just an egg factory. Next year, my chickens will be hatching and raising their own babies, and I will be able to watch and enjoy the mama hen teaching the babies the ways of the chicken world, the way nature intended.
Your mama hen looks like a very good mama. I would trust her to know what she is doing. Your pictures warms the heart.
OMG I hate those pictures. My best momma hen is broody again after raising a couple this spring and I'm like NO MORE CHICKS. I had two others go broody since she hatched those and broke them. Now I'm thinking of getting her some eggs...
