I have a broody chicken and a broody duck. I moved the broody chicken into a dog crate with zero issues. I attempted to do the same with my duck today, and she absolutely panicked! She currently has her nest in the greenhouse, which is not safe because we are now getting into the 90s and 100s soon. I have a pond so someone brought me three pet ducks, all females. They slept by the pond, they do not know how to fly. An owl I assume, killed one of them, so now I do not let any of them sleep outside. The greenhouse was the perfect solution since it is empty. Now that the temps are increasing quickly, I had to get her out of there. Well, it was about 2 to 3 hours before I ended up having to put her back in the greenhouse with her eggs, which she was so happy to nestle back on top of them once back in the greenhouse. But that entire time in the dog crate, she was panicking and walking around. So when I finally moved her back, I had to quickly put the eggs back under her because she was trying to murder me, and I had to gently roll the eggs, so now I’m worried about them being injured from rolling, or her being off of them for 2 to 3 hours. Sorry, I know I am rambling, but if any of that made sense, can I hear some opinions. The babies are about 10 days old.

I had my incubator get accidentally turned off for over 12 hours a few months ago. The chicken eggs I had in it were about half way through development. They were very cold when I found them. I didn’t have much hope but every one of them hatched. So, for two hours, I wouldn’t worry!

Move her at night might be helpful. While she's off the nest, put the dog crate where her nest is and put her nest inside. Let her return and get used to the cage. Then move the crate with her in it at night to her new spot. Try to get her as comfortable as possible. Cardboard around the cage can help provide her with extra privacy.

You said something about all females? If the eggs aren't fertilized, you should discourage her instead. ;)

Sorry, I didn’t clarify, lol A couple of mallards have been coming to my pond… and they are no gentlemen!

Oh wow, that makes me feel so much better! I would absolutely think if it had been 12 hours and they were cold, they would for sure be gone. That’s awesome!
