Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I use the same feeder.

And I have the same problem.

What I did is put the feeder in a cardboard box inside the cage(box).

I cut the front of the box about an inch and a half high, I left the other three sides at about 5 inches.  When they empty the feeder or almost empty it, I pull it out and make them clean up the bottom of the box.

When they get it cleaned ( or reasonably cleaned). I put a full feeder back in.  I have a couple chicks that seem to find joy in throwing feed out of the feeder..

good luck.

I have the same feeder too. I just remove it for a day or two after they have scattered most of the feed out of it. Trust me, they'll scratch around and pick up what they dropped. It's instinctual. When we get them in the coop, I have plans for a spill proof feeding system but while they are babies, this works best for me.

I'll be praying for your family. May Kendra's health improve greatly w the new procedure!

Hey Blooie awesome post. I plan on watching the youtube link you provided later tonight. I'm glad I found this post. We just ordered our incubator and are trying to wait patiently so we can get some eggs to hatch. We have big birds and some that are under the heat lamp now inside our kitchen until they are ready to meet the big girls in the coop. You mentioned something about brainstorming some new cave ideas. I have one I may try for our next go round. What about the plastic cave type things pet stores use for their mouse and rats. I've seen them big enough that baby ferrets use them. It's not tapered but with some trimming it could be. What are the thoughts from you and the BYC community about something like that. Or maybe a cave that you would use for lizards.
