Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

well if you give them heat and the power goes out, they will not be acclimated to the cold and suffer more... I can be a day or 2 with out power after an ice storm

Yah I would be worried about that.
They dont need heat

Well when maybe I won't worry about it. I just read on here all the people who heat the coop. I would just hate to have a coop fire or have the power go out and they all diet.

Just sit and watch chickens for a few hours. Those feathers are miracles for heat management. Fluff out and you have more air for insulation smoothed back cools em down. I am constantly amazed at how hot chicken feet are when ever I have had to hold one for a time. All they realllly need is a break from the wind and a place to keep dry.... all the rest is gravy.

I have rarely seen a thread/post about adding heat in winter that didn't have at least a half dozen posts responding telling them they don't need heat.
I guess I haven't seen those. But its good to know that many people don't heat the coop. That saves me extra stress of using heating lamps etc....

Since this is my first year doing this I guess I'll just see how they do. I just want to make sure they don't end up freezing to death! Sounds like they should be fine.

Here's an update pic of the girls at two weeks enjoying their daily clump of dirt mixed with herbs, dandelions, chickweed, and whatever I think they may enjoy exploring. It keeps fully occupied for most of the afternoon. I introduced a horizontal nipple waterer, but I can't tell if their beaks are strong enough to manipulate it, but they understand it and drink when I fill the little cup. So I left the regular waterer in with it for now. The girls only seem to use MHP at night now. The rest of the day they're exploring or laying/sitting in the shavings.
