Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Quote:
float thingy works I have had a single one on a 110 gallon stock tank now for ten years. Yes its hooked up to a hose. I am not sure what joked is.

I was just showing what I use. and stating why. Obviously it wont work for every one. when I have chicks or littleuns in the coop I cap it with chicken wire so no one drowns... I set the wire about half an inch below the water.

I run hoses to all locations in my yard where water will be delivered.

Within the coop I had three of these waterers setup for the different pens. Run off a PVC pipe that had hose bibs attached. From those I used washer connection hoses to run to the waterers.

Sorry deb. I just could not type well and that didn't come out right. I totally appreciate seeing what you use. I was trying to say that I was not sure HOW those devices work and asking if it has to be HOOKED up to a hose. I'll try to do better proof reading!!

Aart's design is great and I considered it but right now I have a 5 gallon bucket (i splurged and got food grade from Lowe's but you don't have to) with horizontal nipples. I also bought a k&h 250 watt stock tank de icer but haven't had to use it yet. I think it should work out great though. I haven't really kept track of exactly how mucb water they drink and I usually refill when it's about halfway gone because they still manage to get a little bit of sand/sediment in it (they like to fly on top) but I would guess that that's usually at least a week or two. I often just forget about it, it lasts soo long I never have to worry. I have 8 birds.

ETA: And actually, I'm sure it definitely lasts longer than a week cause I can't even remember when I refilled it last and it's still pretty full. I may start keeping track of it.

We use the K & H bucket heaters as well in a 5 gallon with horizontal nipples. We are in Colorado and our waterers are out in the run, we have had no issues with them freezing and the bucket heater is awesome. It has a thermostat that turns on when certain temp and off when a certain temp, the are floatable or submersible and they are made for buckets both plastic and metal. Love ours! Use them with the chicks as well and had no issue. At some point we had 42 birds last year with 2- 5 gallon buckets and 2 - 3 gallon for the babies. Probably filled them once a week.

Do you use a 250 watt one for a 5 gallon bucket?

Oh. I see the pics now. Thanks! Something made my 3 week chicks mad at the MHP. They were squawking like crazy at dusk and are now all huddled by the waterer. They are still inside the house. It doesn't get below 60 at night so I'm sure they will be fine. I need to start shifting them outside soon anyway.

Rent a coop makes a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and horizontal nipples already attached..... Now we are talking. I didn't have much luck when I tried to make my own waterers with vertical nipples. They still seemed to drip

So this batch of chicks have been super easy so far. Second night outside and they put themselves to bed at 7. Brooder check shows temp at 95 and dropped to 93 as it starts to get cooler tonight. Took the opportunity to snap a few bedtime shots. Bear with me, my iPad is acting up and can't upload. BRB

My understanding is the vertical nipples do tend to leak, while the horizontal don't, or not as much. Just got to thread it in just right.

A sight for sore eyes!! Don't they look miserable without a heat lamp glaring on them??? 95 seems a little high with MHP, but I guess if they're happy that's all that counts.
