Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Quote: I was up until 10 PM last night sewing a new pillow case for the new MHP, cutting the fencing, playing with hot melt glue, burning my fingers. I also used the little mini bungee cords, and put some hot melt on the ends of the wire hooks. Those little bungees provide a nice tight fit, to hold the HP up snug to the underside of the frame. I massacred a towel and will get 3 nice pads to cover top of MHP with it.

As always, there is always one chick who is not the brightest crayon in the box. Stand alone and chirp: "Hey guys. Where did you go????? I'm COLD!!!!" I keep running down stairs to redirect the poor lost soul, but usually by the time I get down there, the crisis is over. They did fine on #4.

As for the arrival of the shipped chicks: I am so not impressed with USPS. My chicks sat for 12 hours before even starting their journey. Then, they were misdirected to Scarborough. Again, sat there all night long... Hoping they arrive in Hampden today, and that I am allowed to pick them up at the Hampden sorting facility. Tracking info states they are not scheduled to arrive until TOMORROW. They left Cackle on Wednesday.

Found that hot melt glue gun does a fantastic job covering the sharp nubs where wire fencing was cut!
Hmmmm...not a bad idea!
As long as glue glob was wrapped completely around a wire so it couldn't fall off and get eaten.
I prefer to grind them, just as tedious but good forever ....and no burns from molten glue and smells better IMO haha!

This is what I just switched too. No more digging out shavings and poo. Under it is a small tray to catch any drips. I can raise it as needed. Sorry you can't see it clearly through the hardware cloth but it's a nipple waterer.

My ducklings are 2.5 weeks old and have stopped using the heating pad entirely. They prefer their huddle box now. Good thing I finished up their house and pond today. Just need to get the pen setup and out they go.
At 2.5 weeks old make sure they are not left unattended in the pond. They are still way too young to be allowed full access to the water

Since they arent waterproof. Maybe your not planning on putting them out this soon but your post sounds like it. So just wanted to be sure.

Pond will be covered with a piece of plywood till they are mostly feathered. No water in it yet.
