Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok, I tried to put something together based on perchie.girl's drawing from a ways back. Here are a few picks. Haven't actually tried it out but looking forward to in probably less than a week... Dowels can be adjusted to different heights as the chicks get bigger. And it fits nicely in the new brooder we just built.
Wow. Very impressive!

So since EEs don't have a comb, are there others early detectors to tell roo vs pullet? I'm just curious since my barred rock (which is most likely a roo) and one of my EEs seem to be the leaders of the pack.

Most folks say to look for 3 distinct rows of "peas" on the comb and those are the boys. Um, someone forgot to tell Dumb Daphne the Flock Complainer about that.

Sweet!!

Why the base out front so far?

Whoa......they're huge! No wonder they don't go in MHP anymore....they just plain don't need it!! Look at that feathering! My first flock looked about like that when I evicted them out to the coop at 5.5 weeks and it was twenty degrees the first night, and it continued to go down as the night progressed! They didn't use the heat lamp I had out there that night or the second night, so I just took it out. That night it snowed and snowed. They were absolutely fine with no heat at all.....

Can't tell anything in the comb from the pictures, but not seeing much red coming in on the shoulders, which is usually another dead giveaway for roos. But they're young yet - a little more time will tell you. (Um, if it crows- boy If it lays an egg- girl You're welcome!)
