Maybe for the next one out.....this one is Little Yokel. @LocalYokel gave me the eggs he won in the MPC Easter egg giveaway and I promised him the first chick would be named after him. I keeps me promises, I do.

So far this one is it, but we just noticed that another egg is rocking a bit. If that one hatches, then the two eggs I pegged for sure as most likely still viable, the Olive Egger and a Green Magnolia, will end up being the ones that hatch. Don't know about the other 6 that are in there.

After reading this thread, I decided to try this method for my chicks, who just arrived this morning! I had the heating pad on all last night so it would be nice and toasty for them when they arrived. I was a little concerned yesterday, as the thermometer placed inside the cave barely registered around 80, but then I decided to see what the temp would be for a baby chick, who would be closer to the pad than the substrate. So I folded a glove, and placed it inside the cave towards the back with a thermometer on top, and when I checked it a little while later, it registered a perfect 95.
I only got to spend a little time with the chicks this morning before heading to work. I dunked their little beaks in the water, showed them the food, then placed each one in the cave. They stayed huddled in there for a little while, (who can blame them after such a long trip in a box!) so I went and took my shower. When I came back to check on them before leaving, they were gathered around the food and water, and seemed quite happy. I'll continue to monitor them and hope this method works as well for my little ones as it has for everyone here that's tried it.

So far MHP has worked so well for me that I think Ill never go back to heat lamps!

Ok, Blooie. Now, I'm gonna dispense some sisterly advice. Get thee to a local keeper of fine chickens. This keeper must also be in posession of a fine rooster. Purchase some fresh unwashed eggs from said chicken keeper, and carefully carry them home. Place them in the Brinsea, and I guarantee, you'll have yourself a batch of popcorn chicks.

@lazy gardener . I picked up 26 Black Copper Marans eggs locally. We are mid hatch - 7 so far, 2 more pips, still 7 that are maybe... 10 were tossed as we went along because they were clearly not progressing. The percentage is still not what I eggspected, but better than the eggs I"ve ordered online!

BTW, I could have ordered from this keeper of fine chickens, but since they were about 1.5 hours away, I made the drive.

I just gotta say, as a new chicken mama, I started out with this method and I am never looking back. With two young children, and having to brood indoors- I was desperate for a way to keep my chicks warm without the risk of fire. Naysayers can most assuredly have their opinions that this method is not for them, but it saved my sanity. I would have been up every hour at night just to check the lamps hold. I would have had chirping chicks all night long. I would not have slept. I would be mean due to lack of sleep and then my family would be running for the hills.

I'm thankful, ever so thankful that you shared this information Blooie. And that I found it. In fact it was my gateway drug into BYC all together haha.
