Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Want to hear a good story about the hardiness of chicks? Last night I moved a broody and newly hatched chicks from behind a wood pile on the front porch, to my maternity ward pen...one hen, thirteen chicks, 2 dud eggs were taken away from the nest.

Went out to feed the kittens this morning and heard a loud peeping from the front porch....could it be? I left one behind?

I did.

Don't know how it happened but here's this big yellow chick sitting on a little ledge of wood in the wood pile, peeping his little heart out. He was warm and active...maybe the kittens slept with him? Doubt it, as he wasn't down in the nest but up on a ledge in the wood pile.... but it's a nice thought.

Temps were in the high 40s, low 50s last night, damp and chilly breeze blowing. No mama, no snuggly nest to bury into, just perched on a piece of firewood all night long. He wasn't chilled or shivering, was active and bright eyed. I put him down next to mama and he ran straight to her, snuggling and burrowing into her feathers until he got access to the underside and disappeared.

So, out of a clutch of 16 eggs, I have 14 vigorous chicks and had 2 clear eggs, unfertilized apparently. I thank God that He watched over that little one through the night and let me hear that loud voice this morning...can you imagine how horrible it would have been to find that little lost chick in a few days when we clear out that wood pile?

You have the most amazing stories! Shows ya that these little Divas are tougher than they look, and the Good Lord watches out for all of them!

Hi All,

Just picked up my first chickens on Sunday! We got 5 RIRs, 2 barred rocks and 3 columbian rocks. We are picking up 4 australorps later this week. So, 14 overall. I have been lurking around here for a while and I'm sooooo thankful I found the MHP thread. I skipped the heat lamp and set up the heating pad. The chicks are loving it! Everyone seems healthy and happy so far. The chicks are straight run, so I'm on the lookout for roosters. We do live in a rural area, so I can have roosters...just obviously not too many for my hens. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for this thread!

My set up is in an old clawfoot tub I'm planning to refinish in our master bath. I hope to move them out to the coop at 3 or 4 weeks, especially since I've reserved some lavender orpington chicks for about that time! Already a victim of chicken math!

Do you have power to the coop?
If so you can move them out now...MHP and all!

The coop is not finished yet...otherwise I would! But yes...hubby is an electrician. The coop will definitely have power!
Isn't that the most wonderful thing? Ken's an electrician too - got an outlet and a light in the coop, an exhaust fan hard wired in, and another outlet in the run for Mama Heating Pad and the stock tank heater for the water bucket in the winter. Love that!
