Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

First of all, young lady, it's not my thread, it's OUR thread. :smack There. That's out of the way and I feel better - sorry about your black eye though! ;)

I never thought about doing an outline...I'm not even sure I'd know where to start. But the idea has a lot of merit and I'm going to research it and figure it out. Thanks! :love

Thanks, Blooie. I really needed that. The black eye will come in useful today. It will take my mind off my head ache, my drippy eyes, my gushing nose, along with the growing mountain of snotty tissues on the computer stand in front of me... and my general "woe is me, pity me world, I have a cold". Now, I can point to my eye, and slap a steak over it, and say, "See what my friend Blooie did?" Perhaps hubby will then grill up that steak for dinner. We're having a heat wave. Feels like summer. All the way up to 19*, so a perfect day for a barbecue. Who cares that we're getting yet AN OTHER snow storm????

See? Haven't I always said that this is the most helpful thread ever? So glad that I was able to assist you....oh, and so sorry about your Wuzwels!

Mine was not a double pad, it was the way I wrapped the heating pad that became the issue.
Hey, Ralphie!!! I hear it's warm in Australia right now....

The one with the cover keeps water out. The one with the flaps, while something is plugged in, can get water in if it rains etc. That can cause a short. Worst case fire hazards, best case outlet shorts out and you have dead chicks when their heat source goes out. :(
Right, thanks @BBZZZZTT
If one looks closely at the picture of the "not OK" one, you will see that clearly embossed on the box are the words "WET LOCATION ONLY WHEN COVER CLOSED". Meaning the live outlet can "exist" in wet conditions only when the covers are closed. This obviously preludes actually USING the outlet in wet conditions when the cover is open which is the only way one COULD use the outlet. Of course you COULD use them when it is wet out but that is an unacceptably dangerous situation.

Note that the "OK" cover is an add on to the box that has the fixture in it, you MIGHT be able to take the flap cover off and put on the OK cover. But see below ;) in case the current fixture does not comply.

@lazy gardener is right, the fixture inside the box must be downstream on a GFI circuit or be a GFI outlet itself as should ALL outlets that are used where they MIGHT get wet.

On the subject of not to be used in wet conditions... heated stands designed for the vacuum system bell chicken waterers! How in the $@&÷;÷*![÷;=$&@*×,# do you expect me to use a water heater without it getting wet?

I'm guessing because you have had the door push the plug out? The outlets are identical with identical power in them. That was my question why does the one not work?

unless the plug is well under an eve or the coop roof, you really need it to be heavy duty, with rubber seals, otherwise the water during heavy rain eventually fries the outlet.

I am not familiar with those, do you have a picture or a link?

"Heated Drinker Base, Set Your Metal Drinker On This Base To Prevent Water From Freezing Down To 10 Degrees Fahrenheit, Base Is Thermostatically Controlled & Has 125W Of Power, Use It Outdoors In A Dry Covered Area."

Several caveats there. The "outdoors" thing suggests there is concern of it overheating and causing a fire. Could just by CYA legal stuff though.

I would be concerned about such things. Whatever it is plugged into best be GFI and protected. I'll bet a lot are used without considering that. Not sure what they have inside but I ASSUME there is a waterproof grommet where the cord goes through the pan.

I guess to an extent my heated dog dish is somewhat similar though since it doesn't have to transfer heat up through a separate container to keep the water warm it doesn't need to get as hot. It only has a 60W heater. Plus the one you showed says good to +10°F, this one was working fine when it was -22°F yesterday morning. Mine is inside the barn and the plug is 4' off the ground so no chance of it getting wet.
