Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Soooo.... I haven't read through the entire 1000 page thread to find out if anyone has mentioned these before but i'm sure someone has come across them:

It seems like the exact piece of equipment that I need but It'll be my first time keeping Geese and I don't know if it's any good? Seems like an official version of the thing everyone here is jury-rigging together minus the fluffy parts?

Yes that’s a brooder heat plate. They work great. The only issue is with the temperature you are going to operate it in. The older Brinsea heat plates do not operate in as cold as conditions as the premier ones do, I do not know about these second generation ones. Make sure you find the fine print to see if it matches the conditions you will brood in.

I might end up getting one of these then; I'll be brooding indoors and I live in the UK so temperatures are going to be very mild, especially in Spring when I plan on getting them - I have discussed with other people on BYC that they don't provide the "soft, dark, safe place" that might help with a goslings development so I might consider pairing it with a "wool hen"? i'm yet to look up where i can get one of those.

I would suggest that you start a thread in the geese forum about using heat plates with goslings...and tag me if you would, I am curious.
Drawback of a purchased heat plate vs a DIY is that the purchased are are small and might not have the heat control that is needed.

Similar idea, lots more money.

Struggling to find a pad with no automatic shut off though; it'll be those damn EU safety Regulations
Can you find one where the auto-shutoff can be disabled?

There aren't many of them here either, most people are using the kind @aart showed. The problem with them is that they won't turn back on if there is a power outage so you need to turn them back on. Not a problem during the day if you are home and will notice the outage. Bigger problem when you are sleeping or off at work.

Good luck with your electric hen and the chicks!
