How does it work when one of the chicks is a rooster? It seems he is starting to call the chicks over to food where he is like the mom used to. Will he become the “leader” in some sense now? I know we only have 5 hens and 1 young rooster so hoping it will be okay until we can expand our flock and housing. Can the rooster be put up at night with the hens?
The cockerel Should be ok living with his pullet sisters and former mom for a few weeks longer. But he May eventually turn into a hormone-crazed teenager. (Some cockerels are gentlemen from the get-go.) Cockerels usually reach puberty before pullets do, so he may try to mate with your hen before he does your pullets. Depending on how dominant your game hen is, she may successfully fend him off, or she may submit and accept him as the "boss." Hopefully he will be the gentlemanly kind of cockerel and will transition peacefully into the natural flock leader.
