I suppose you could try putting late eggs in a ziploc baggie before you put it in the Buddy? That way if you got a bad one and it burst, your Buddy wouldn't be ruined. And whooo! I can only aimagine your wife's reaction, my boyfriend gets all annoyed at me if I spend just small amounts on my chickens. So what kind of birds are you hatching then?
