Are you allowed by law to go on construction sites to look through their dumpsters? I would love to go to some around here, but I thought you could get in big trouble for doing that.

Absolutely, all what you need to do is just ask the builder or the owner of the project, most of them are happy to let you pick up trash otherwise they pay high $ to get rid of it.
Just tell them what you are going to do with the trash and what you can have.I did it for so many times and I always got the yes answer and they were real happy about it.
Oh huney, how most of my friends envy me for my husband working construction. Would you believe we built a 10'x16' trex/composite deck off of our new house with SCRAPS they had left over. Scraps being 85 10' long planks. I sold what we didn't use for $500!!!! Gone in 5 minutes on craigslist... so I bought a fence for my veggi garden and got my first chickens!
Then my husband drags home an unbelievable amount of crown molding, made of composite. Got the whole down stairs done with it! He fixed our roof shingles with scraps, and reinsulated our rear attic (we have 2 attics) with scraps, we put in a 20ft brick and peagravel path from our driveway to front door with SCRAPS! We're building a new larger coop with scraps someone gave us off of craigslist and a pile of scraps we already had! I can't BELIEVE the waste! AND MOST OF IT IS ALL NEW AND NEVER BEEN USED!!!!
We're collecting the hardboard siding scraps from his job now to reside our house! Our house was a massive fix up project/ foreclosure mess someone got into. We're 3 months here now and probably haven't spent more then $300 out of pocket doing any work on it at all!!! ITS AMAZING!
Dumpster dive people... find a construction site and dumpster dive. Do you know what you can get for $$$ with scrap metal these days.
My house was the biggest 'let go' house in the neighborhood and everyone is amazed at the changes, but without all that free junk it'd still be a crap box.
ORMAN IS A GENIUS! I hope you all get great coop material out there.... waste not want not!
The dumpsters around here are taller than I am. I guess they mandate the height so neighbors don't see ugly trash. I'd have to bring a step ladder to get to the stuff. The sides are 6 feet high with wheels.
