Man up the street, sort of threatening me....what should I do?

I would've felt threatened by someone holding a bag and confronting me about my bird..
Obviously, he thought you'd just hand him over...Like that was gonna happen.
Document what was said.
How many people between him and you have roosters: How could he say it was yours? Is he just rounding them up?
Just let him wait until the HENS start crowing.

I agree with Cyn on this too:
Why is crowing some special, horrific noise when horns and music blaring, dogs barking all night because they are left outside, ATVs vrooming around, etc, is okay?

Try to be a bit understanding of this guys position. He may be a horrible sleeper (like me) and the rooster is driving him nuts! I think it behooves all of us to keep up the good name of chickens by being thoughtful of our neighbors. Is it possible to keep him cooped up in a garage so the noise is not so loud (like some on this forum do)? If he is bothered there may be others not so willing to say anything. I am very concerned about my rooster as he is the only one in the area. I went around this weekend and talked to five neighbors in a radius--four are totally cool with the rooster, one is not so happy. If my rooster starts crowing constantly, I will probably try to rehome him--keeping peace with the neighbors is more important than a stupid rooster--right?

Weeeelllll, not really. But that's just me, I guess. I let them make all their noise and they need to leave my roosters alone. But, then, I live in the country with the closest neighbor several hundred feet away. Anyone living in such a rural area should expect roosters crowing.

I just think we need more information before we can draw any useful conclusions. Exactly what was said on both sides? What kind of "bag" was being carried? How big are the property lots? How far away is this guy's house from the rooster in question? How many roosters are in the neighborhood? Is this area just "unincorporated", or is it truly zoned for agriculture (A-1)? There's just all sorts of things that could influence the situation. Ideally, we should try to avoid conclusions when we don't have facts yet.

I wouldnt get rid of my rooster if i was allowed to have it just becasue my nieghbors dont like it !
I dont get it . Its ok for dogs to bark up a storm but if a rooster crows it seems like the end of the world .

Ahhh, but it's NOT okay for dogs to bark up a storm. A dog owner can be cited and even forced to get rid of his dog if a neighbor complains about it loudly enough.

Well I thought the origanal poster was pretty clear. A man showed up with a friend and complained about the roo. She is allowed to have her roo. She felt threatened. What would we sugjest she does. End of it, she didn't ask for any detailed info just she felt threatened what could/should she do.

Call and make a report.

No trespassing signs

coop camera

lock on coop

How simple was that. Now just were did this thread take a hike into I need to know every little bitty detail. And how did it become a your in the wrong get rid of your roo. Some days it just gets sooooooooo out of control here. Do you really think that this person will feel comfortable coming and posting for help after the turn this is taking. I understand that some people really feel the need to swim up stream but come on people there are debate boards. And it is always the same ones. Go figure.

Nobody should have to live in fear. Please file the report. Good luck.

If I lived anywhere close to other people whether they seem nice or not I'd put a padlock on my coop. Even some minor cheap lock is fine since if they really want to they will find a way to break the latch or door. It's just to deter people who are considering such things and because if something happened you can prove a thief broke the lock. Then I would get some of those dirt cheap fake cameras that don't actually record anything but look real and have a little light blinking to make people think they are. Put them in visible spots pointed at key places like the coop door and where the chickens normally wander and put up signs to tell people they are there. That by itself stopped a whole mess of trouble my mom was having with some apartments she managed. 2 ladies got in a fight and started doing things like cutting each other's window screens and throwing things in their apartments. Fake cameras and a sign and it was all over. Those things are no threat to the other person but they help make people think twice about harming your birds and give you a little more legal recourse like the no trespassing signs.

Jean, nobody here said that the OP was wrong, and nobody said that she had to get rid of her roo. Some people did say that she should buy a shotgun, called the guy psycho and crazy, and so on. Just as you think that some people feel the need to swim up stream, I think that some people feel the need to overreact.

Also, nobody said that the OP had a responsibility to tell us every little bitty detail -- just that WE should not be jumping to conclusions when WE don't have all the important info. I don't think that's a terrible thing to say.

Now, I HAVE been threatened, and I DID report the details of the incident to police, and I DID preserve the evidence. Those are all good things to do. But panicking and assuming the worst are not.

Well Chickie is either a little cockerel, or guess what....the hen HAS started crowing!!! So it is the two of them. I dont hear any others near by but if I walk a bit from my house I can hear them. From these guys' vantage point, Im not sure what they are hearing.....but I will say I listened to yapping dogs way into the night last night myself!
Regarding your advice...I did write down everything I could remember about the conversation and what I witnessed the two guys doing with the bag and standing there staring at my house when they thought I had gone inside. I was never successful talking to a deputy but I called the sheriff and they have record of my complaint, without detail.
