I'm starting to get a little bit worried by the mass quantities of people stock piling guns

I get the rice but why salt?

Edited because I wanted to clarify: I assume you meant rice and salt for the chickens ... I don't give my chickens salt. Should I?

That's for people - white rice will keep for decades, and table salt is an essential source of iodine if you don't live near the ocean. (You also need non-iodized salt to preserve food without refrigeration.)

I honestly think that in a collapsing economy, being able to raise you own food (meat, eggs, veggies, whatever) is the smartest thing you can do...self sufficiency. It's what got a lot of families through the Great Depression. yes, you may be at the whim of oil prices, poultry feed prices, etc...but the same thing is reflected in grocery store prices...just a thought.

yes, that is exactly what I meant! Please don't give your chickens any salt! Though white rice in moderation might be okay lol!

Gee, and I thought we were loading shotgun shells so as not to kill chicken thieves. Bacon rinds leave nice stripes behind too!

This is wisdom! And don't forget that it is not all in our hands on any given day. Be thankful for everything because God has promised that if we love Him he will work everything together for our good!

My coop, which is based on "the traditional american chicken coop" was built during the depression. It was meant to hold a large number of birds for both eggs and meat production. I found this out from a post right here on byc, my coop is very similar in construction and design.

Wish I knew exactly how many birds were kept in it. We are only allowed to have 8 hens, no roos. I currently have 14 hens, no roos. Wish I was allowed to have a roo to have a more self sustaining flock. Were the economy really to collapse, I'd be looking for a roo asap!
